Good question!

Does it not give the appearance of raising themselves above the sheep they are to shepherd?

A pastor is a servant, not a Deity such as Christ who could hold the position of standing above the people when addressing them.

The premise that the sheepherder stands upon the hill, looking down is false. A "Good Shepherd" such as Christ, stands amongst the sheep, to be prepared to fend off the wolves effectively..

To be seen. This was started years ago before the age of electronic microphones...in a crowded tent or room, it is easier to see the person who is standing on a pulpit or stage...it helps to focus ones attention on the speaker. Same reason policiticians used pulpits when giving speeches. Some modern church buildings don't have pulpits, merely raised platforms with a portable Bible stand in the center...the pastors I listen to walk around, and don't stand at the pulpit.

The need something to put notes and a Bible on? Our pastor uses something like a music stand, not a pulpit.

This is a tradition that goes back a long long time..but it is not in the Bible..we just have the Minister or Pastor at a level where everyone can see him...but I have seen Pastors preach in the Aisle...it is up to the minister..

I suspect it started for two reasons. One, the minister was considered to be above the rest of the congregation spiritually...thus the higher position.....and two, back in the days before wearable portable microphones, it was easier to hear his message if it came from over your head instead of directly at you.

Jesus used a boat one time and another time a hilltop. They just have to be in a position where people can hear and see them.

To make it easier for people to hear and see them, and just maybe to seem "higher" than everyone else.
