The biggest misconception is that punching power only comes from upper body strength. Wrong. Much of true punching power comes from leverage and the ability of a fighter to shift the weight from his lower body to the upper body as he delivers a punch.. While there are many examples of short powerful punchers, Marciano and Tyson, there are also many examples of skinny fighters having ferocious power, i.e, Tommy Hearns, Alexis Arguello, and Manny Pacquiao.

So any strength training regimen should also focus on footwork where the fighter focuses on planting and pivoting the back leg as he follows through with the overhand (right or left) power punch.

to improve punch power, i would throw medicene balls. you need to throw it like you would a punch though, otherwise your just wasting your time. you could also do the classic "swingin a sledgehammer at a tire".

push ups could work...or try grabbing weights...like 10 lbs...depending how strong you are..and make slow punch movements while they are in your hands...
