A lot depends on the cat. Some cats just won't tolerate other animals at all. Others are pretty easy going. Most cats can be taught to at least ignore other pets, even if they can't ever get to the place where they're pals. Take time to acclimate your new pet. Keep them in separate rooms for awhile, letting them get used to each others' scents. Go pet one, then let the other smell the scent on you. Swap toys, beds, and rooms, and do this for a couple days, then move on to supervised visits. When they get where they can meet face-to-face without growling, hissing, or chasing, then you've made it. But always be watchful, as it's pretty easy to break the truce between a dog and cat.

Usually, they'll kind of ignore each other, or try to stay away from each other. That's OK - way better than fighting, anyway.

From personal experience, it all depends on the cat and dog. I have seen some cats and dogs become best friends, while others have wanted to tear into each other.

One of the best ways to introduce them is in a neutral environment. That way, no party has claimed the area as their own, making it where neither of them will protect it.

Another way is to introduce them where one is protected in a cage. Depending on how they react can tell you a lot about how they would react to one another without the protective barrier. If the dog is interested without tearing into the cage and the cat is just as curious and not hissing, then it might be good to see how they act with you holding the cat. Again, introduce them in baby steps.

I hope this helps!

If a cat is raised with a dog (the dog also has to have a friendly disposition towards cats) it can work. If they are established pets, that you are thinking of mixing together, you may have to take it very slow. Make sure the cats have a space that the dogs are not allowed in, so they don't stress out to much.

I have 8 dogs and 4 cats and they all get along fabulously. When I take the dogs for a walk, the cats come too. It is a very peaceful household.

Some will some won't.

If you are adopting them, try fostering first. Then if it doesn't work out - do what you gotta do.

Heads Up! If you are moving in with someone with the other pet, make an agreement to the solution before the move. People will fight for their pets sometimes more protectively than for their pocessions.

it depends on the dogs and the cats personalities. it is easier to get them used to each other if the are both young and grow up together.
