Coming from a Navy Officer:
Don't join for those reasons only. As a matter of fact, go see your school counselor and talk about wanting to die for your country.
As General Patton said, " The goal of a soldier is not to die for your country, but make the other poor bastard die for his."
Study hard and make good grades, go to college and then decide on joining. You have a long three years ahead of you filled with great changes in your ambition in life.
As far as the Army or Navy - if you join the Army you are most likely going to Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea or Africa out of basic. In the Navy you are most likely going on ship and after 3-4 years could be doing the same as the Army.

I think that it's a good thing to join the army or navy, but the 10th grade is a little too early to be making these kinds of decisions.
Joining the army or navy can lead to good careers once you leave the service. I would use the time to do a lot of research of the various opportunities and what you need to study if you want to become a specialist.

Its great that you want to serve our country, but since you seem pretty young and naive, i recommend that you inform yourself more about world issues, especially the conflict in Iraq before you get yourself involved. You have a right to know what you are getting into. Because in the end, i believe that a population of well informed citizens is more influential than any military force.

Sounds to me that you don't so much want to save your country, but go down as a hero. That's understandible, everyone wants to die with people thinking nice thoughts about them.
But really think about it before you join. My mom is in the Navy, she appreciates the experience, but being in it was such hard work.
You also have to think about your family, when my mom had to leave for 9-11 I was heart broken.
It's a big step, talk to people you know who are in the military and see what they have to say.
I am glad to hear you want to support our country, I was considering the same myself.

I think that is very courageous of you, my father is a retired army col., with the knowledge of army experience in my family, if someone went in now they are practically guaranteed to go to Iraq or the mid-east, but with the change of presidents coming soon that might not be the case with you being younger. It might not be very likely in your time in the service to be killed in combat or overseas. My dad did a lot of desk work, it isn't all playing with guns like the movies. In my opinion there are other things you can do to show dedication to our country.... in my opinion

You can consider joining, but please do not plan to die!!! You might also consider the Air Force--they have some top notch training and they are fairly challenging while serving our country. Make sure you check into things completely, learn all you can, and talk to as many people as possible. Good luck, you will do the right thing. And thanks for being a patriot and willing to serve!

Its admirable that you want to join the military. But dont rush yourself, take time to enjoy growing up, there will always be a need for people like you that are willing to sacrifice for their country. And believe me its a long hard road, you have to be tough, both in mind and body. And remember you dont want to die for your country, you want the enemy to die for his. Hope that helps.

Joining the military is not a death sentence... there are many things you can do in the military,,, fighting in a war is not the only thing. so if you sad about 911,, then adopt a soldier. do things you can do now to support. You will also learn a thing or two about the military.
You still have 2 years to think about it. by then I hope the war is over..
