According to Leviticus 20:9, if you curse the name of your father or mother, you must be put to death. Well isn't that lovely? Can't you just feel the love?

As for the "Old Covenant" excuse, you also have to explain why Jesus would say that he didn't come to abolish the Law. Matthew 5:17
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them"

Sigh. You already know the answer! You even put it in your question.
And if you're going to quote Matthew 5:17 quote the whole verse. He came to fulfill the law.

Let's break it down a bit:
When people sinned in the old testament they had to present a sin offering or suffer some sort of punishment. Rough times right?
Jesus steps on the scene, pays the dept. You don't have to make animal sacrifices anymore. You don't have to stone sinners and rebellious kids or gay people. They can all be forgiven now.

Hope this helps,...

Back then, if you "cursed your parents", you were pretty much on your own.

It isn't so much as they were saying that GOD told them to kill you as it was that they were saying that GOD says, "You're as good as dead. It's rough out there. Noone gives a damn about you. People are lined up around the block waiting for the opportunity to use you up and throw you in the trash. Your best bet would be to stay on good terms with you GOD fearing, honest parents. Because sometimes.... most times, they're the only people that give a damn about you". I don't know how true that is these days, but back then, it was the status quo.

Yes, the keyword here is "fulfill." When Jesus was asked which was the greatest commandment he responded, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul and all your mind, and the second is like unto it, love your neighbor as yourself. On these TWO commandments hang all the law and the prophets." I think that pretty well explains it.

Back then, they could not get Born-Again.
GOD could not live in them.
Those people could get pretty Evil and Wicked.
Had to be "Tough" on them. Tough Love.

After Jesus Died, we get Born-Again, and that affects your Mind and it is easier to be Good.

Now, look at the People and Nations that don't Believe in GOD (Jesus) and see how Evil and Wicked they can get!

Great idea if we did that there would be less useless teenagers hanging out selling dope on street corners.

If that were the case, I don't think anyone would have made it through puberty.

That darn Bible gets in the way of Christians more than it helps them.
