The Jesus Mysteries
Was the 'Original Jesus' a Pagan God?
British authors insist that there is barely a shred of evidence for the existence of an historical Jesus.
Who was Jesus?
... "real" historical Jesus and the origins of Christianity. Jesus: Pagan Christ or Jewish Messiah?
ByTimothy Freke and Peter Gandy
The traditional history of Christianity is hopelessly inadequate to the facts. From our research into ancient spirituality it has become obvious that we must fundamentally revise our understanding of Christian origins in the most shocking of ways. Our conclusion, supported by a considerable body of evidence in our book, The Jesus Mysteries, is that Christianity was not a new revelation. It was a continuation of Paganism by another name. The gospel story of Jesus is not the biography of an historical Messiah. It is a Jewish reworking of ancient Pagan myths of the dying and resurrecting Godman Osiris-Dionysus, which had been popular for centuries througho

Horus walked on water, healed a blind man with his spittle, and raised a dead man named Lazarus. I leave the math to you.

All religions evolve out of one another as the human spirit changes and seeks a higher understanding of its existence and possibility of transformation.
The roots of all religion lie in what are known as the Mysteries, ie the most ancient understanding of Man's relationship to God, or the Universal Self. In the West, this understanding has always been very individualistic, in the East it has been holistic. The Westerner seeks development and union with God, the Easterner seeks to disappear into the eternal rythmns of the Universe.
In the West, the oldest known Mysteries we know of are the Egyptian Mysteries of Immortality, the remains of which we find in the Hermetica and Alchemy. Similar Mysteries existed in Persia with the Zoroastrians and with the Jews, as evinced by the Kaballah. What we call the Gnostics also tapped into these Mysteries, as did Greek and Orphic Rites such as the Eleusinian Mysteries.
All these Mysteries spoke of the possibility of the development of the Soul to pure Light/Spirit, through the death of the Earthly Self and the transformation of the individual into the Cosmic or Spiritual Self. Before the advent of Christianity, these Mysteries were confined to the elite few - the Priesthood, the Ruling Families (remember that the Pharoahs were regarded as Gods incarnated in human form and when they died they were reborn in divine form).
Something clearly happened at the moment of Christianity's inception in which all these Mysteries gelled into one and became exoteric - in other words the "Light" Christ is said to have brought into the world was the possibility of achieving this state for all. That was the revolution of Christianity - the sudden evolution of an ancient spirituality into something universal. The promise of Christianity is that "We shall be as he is" (First Epistle Of John) and Eternal Life. John's Gospel describes Christ's gift as being "the power to become Sons of God". John's Gospel, which is the most mystical and the most inititiatic, contains within it, along with the other three, the coded path of the transformation of Man into his Divine Self through Christ. It is no wonder that the Gnostics, who practised and espoused this esoteric approach to the Christian message, embraced John as one of their own.
So the idea espoused by the Jesus Mysteries, that Christianity is an evolution of ancient religions and beliefs, is not necesarrily wrong. But to say that this invalidates Christianity is like saying "I knew that artist when he was a child, therefore I don't recognise him as being an artist now". Christianity was an evolution. The word "Christ", remember, wasn't his name. It means "Anointed One". The Gnostic Gospel of Philip refers to the Chrism - the Anointing of the Initiate - as a mystical state in which the individual becomes "a Christ". Whoever Jesus was, a real person, an amalgam of different people, an expression of an ideology, it seems clear that surrounding his story is a mystical vision of humanity which remains important and which inspired people for a long time.
So whether he was a single real person or not is not the point. Its what he symbolises that matters.

the sad part is we expect religion to have some sort of proof. we expect not to need faith but to own truth. When in reality, we can only understand what we know and find solace in the things that make us feel better. And if Jesus is someone who makes you feel better about what you understand of this life, than who cares if he's pagan or jewish or buddhist. And if all it does is tear up your psyche because you just can't make your heart believe there was some guy who was half-human half-God, than fine, believe in what does ease your mind.
"Each religion, so dear to those whose life it sanctifies, and fulfilling so necessary a function in the society that has adopted it, necessarily contradicts every other religion, and probably contradicts itself." ~ George Santayana

Well according to the current Chrisitian beliefs of the Republicans in the USA, Jesus was a godless liberal. They feel that his teachings such as be kind to others, and help the poor and sick simply have no place in todays political Christian world. They have stated that no Republican candidate would back such things for fear of being seen as liberal. Sad but true, they have turned their back on what still fills their wallets.

Your kidding right? Go back to school and read in your history text books. It talks about Jesus and he was a real person. Just because some guy has a random drug induced thought on how he might be able to connect some guy to another religious sect does not mean he is right. Find out for yourself. Don't just trust other peoples opinions on everything. Have you personally read these ancient pagan myths yourself or are you just taking his word for it. There is an awesome thing called research that helps explain a lot of things. And if you do not know the real answer...do not say anything because you make yourself look stupid.

Jesus might well be a stolen myth from other cultures actually.
There was a very similar messiah like him, who claimed to be the son of god and did all those miracles which Jesus did... "Apollonius" of Tyanna.
