Dear newarc,
First i would like to say in regards to your question whether you are wasting your time- it depends on what you are hoping to accomplish. i think i've seen both Christians and Atheists attack one another and i've responded to both accordingly (even to other Christians who have misrepresented the name of Christ). i think however, it is to be expected that Christians and Atheists are not going to agree on very many things when it comes to religion. At the very core of each group's beliefs there is a large disparity. That being said- i expect that this would be a forum where two people can disagree and still be civil about it and i can say that i've seen a lot of uncivility from people who name the name of Christ.
Secondly, i want to say that i would not base what Christians believe based on yahoo answers. As a Pastor i came on Yahoo answers to basically just answer questions-- to encourage people, help people, and engage in intellecutal dialogue. i think its important to learn what people believe and why they believe what they believe.
i have seen many answers on here from people who call themselves Christians but exhibit a very un-Christ like attitude or misquote and misrepresent Christianity. i guess i encourage you to learn for yourself what Jesus says- because there are many answers on here which don't really represent what Jesus said or what his attitude truly is.
America is a nation where we have this wonderful freedom of religion. Yes, Christianity does teach that there is only one way to have a relationship with God- but people must choose that way for themselves and this forum is a great place for people to learn about that and also for Christians to learn why people believe the things that they do.
I don't know that everyone engages in a "battle mentality" but i think the intensity is sometimes high- because the subject matter is important. If there is a God, what He says must really matter and affect the way that we live and the choices that we make in life.
Well those are my two cents- feel free to browse my answers and i hope that you will find that there are some believers on yahoo answers- who truly try to show respect to people even if what people believe may differ from their own beliefs.
Kindly,
Nickster

America is not a Christian country..Billy Graham and his son Franklin have said this and also the late Jerry Farwell..
The United States has about 85% people believe there is a God but as a country we are far from being a Christian country.
Most people don't argue about their beliefs..they just have them..i was told never to argue about religion and politics..
what is the use? we all have our belief system..believe what you want..I go to Church because I want to ..not to please my wife..as she is Catholic and I am Lutheran..it is something I want to do and it is not up for discussion ..period..that is why I don't understand why the same questions and answers keep coming up for debate...who really listens? nobody...people should treat people as they would want to be treated..I don't have to explain my faith or lack of faith to anyone..this is all a bunch of hogwash to me..have a nice day

Two reasons....faith in a religion instead of faith in God...and pride. Everyone wants to be right.
And by the way...all Christian religions teach tolerance of others. Those people who condemn others for their beliefs are wrong..regardless of which side they are on.

I would say it is because they believe their hatred and ignorance is necessary to save non-believers from hell, or bad karma, or a wasted life, or whatever they are convinced the punishment will be. In their minds the only way to save wayward people is to declare full out war against every religion but their own.

It does say not to be unequally yoked, and that means not to marry someone who does not believe as you, and it also refers to friends and family if one don't believe as the others , and he doesn't change ,his presents is a stepping stone to the ones that are young and ones easily swayed.....it's like being a alcoholic, if you are a recovering one you don't go to the old hang out to be with your old friends, for the sobriety to work he will have to stop being around the temptation...and the devil will use people to mess you up especially if your faith isn't as strong as it needs to be.

I am not here to fight. and I choose best answers if they are really the best. I really like Ur point. the religions do argue A LOT! And I wish I knew why. but until we do, all we can do is ask why!?

There is no problem with those who think differently but those who do differently that are the problem. How do you overcome a faith that tells it's adherents to kill and hate all those who happen not to believe in that religion?

We are only trying to renew your belief about God because there are many people who refuse to believe God but if you insist on your false belief, you can leave this section and do not bother to ask question of your doubt about God if you do not believe him.
