It's like a plain, ordinary bush that everyone sort of has. Dark green, shiny leaves about a centimetre wide and two long. No flowers or anything that I've ever seen.

Sounds like you are either talking about Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) or Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria).

You should be careful about planting Yaupon Holly however because, as its scientific name hints at, the leaves will induce vomiting. So if you have young kids around the house, it may not be a good idea to plant that particular bush.

Also, Boxwood (to me) can develop an unfavorable odor in the heat. Some people enjoy it though.....

One last thing, both these plants do in fact bloom. However, they are very small and inconspicuous:

Depending on what part of the country that you are residing in, there are a number of shrubs that come to mind. The first being the Wax Leaf Ligustrum which does have small white flowers that appear in spring time, tho not noted for its blooms. The second is Cleyera Japonica with its new growth producing a copper color to the new leaves later turning dark green. The third is the Viburnum Odoratissimum which also will produce white flowers after they have established and matured.
