My dog, a toy, apricot poodle, has scratchy eyes. He is always rubbing his head on the carpet, etc. to scratch it. I was thinking maybe its allergies, but what else could it be? He has tears sometimes, and so far there is no sign of discharge from his eyes. He also scratches his body sometimes, too. What is this?

My dog had this exact problem. He probably has scratches on the surface of its eyes. This can be caused by something as simple as his hair getting into his eyes, and then it gets worse because the dog then starts rubbing the scratched eyes and it gets worse and worse. You need to trim the hair around his eyes diligently. Go to the vet and have them do a test on the eyes for scratches. He/she will put drops in the eye and then they have a special light that shows the scratches. Call ahead to make sure the vet has this equipment because scratches like this are not visible to the naked eye. He will give you antibiotic ointment to treat it, it will not heal by itself. Good luck.

it could be an allergy but it could also be something else.
i think the best thing would be to take him to the vet and get him checked up.
also the vet can do an allergy test on your dog to see what he is allergic against. i thank that would help a lot already to figure out what is cause the itchy eyes.
good luck and all the best

Sounds like allergies my dog has the same problem the vet told us to give her benadryal. With his body how often do you get him groomed? He could have a sensitivity to the shampoo they use or just part allergies. Try using a sensitive skin shampoo I use a oat meal shampoo it's for dry sensitive skin and my dog comes out shinny .

Does sound like allergies. Have your vet or a dermatologist check him out! :)
