.50 caliber handguns, are just like .25 ACP pistols, i.e. the tools of experts, and not good choices for novices.
I've been a gun crank for 40 years, and I've shot lots of different guns. I have no desire to shoot a .500 S&W Magnum. I know my limits, and hurting wrists are no longer necessary to prove my manhood.
If I can't handle something with my .44 S&W Spl or .357 Magnum, I will reach for a rifle.
BTW, if I were in Alaska, and I'm considering moving there, I'd carry a 4" S&W M-629, .44 RemMag. Not because it is the most powerful handgun around, but because it is a gun I have confidence in, and know I can handle the recoil for repeated shots.

You bet it is! Any .50 will be worth it's weight in gold 50 years from now. Get one, and unless you are glutton for punishment, put it up and save it for an investment.
However, the Desert Eagle in .50 AE is a good shooter. It has the perceived recoil of a .44 Magnum load. Any one who handle a .44 Magnum can handle one.

I own a S&W .500 magnum revolver. It is a fun, neat gun and after awhile you adjust to the recoil. Is it pratical? No, of course not. If you have the money it's a cool gun to have. I wouldn't make it my 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choice though. Yes, it is good if you are in grizzly bear territory, but other than that it is overkill. For me, it's a toy.

Good for what? Generally speaking, a fifty caliber handgun is too unwieldy to lug around in the field. It is a 'bear' to shoot and if it is a semi-auto it will probably jam if you hold it 'limp-wristed.'
I can't envision a need for anything bigger than a .44 Magnum and in semi-auto, nothing bigger than a .10mm. I mean, if you need something bigger than a forty-four you probably should be shooting a rifle or a shotgun. If you need a fifty caliber handgun to 'take it out,' then you probably should be using a .500 Nitro Express rifle, not a handgun. LOL! Now if you just like big handguns and enjoying shooting them, then more power to you!

any handgun is a good gun to own. If you are talking about the .500 S&W it is more than most people can handle. The .44 mag. is about the max that most people can handle comfortably.

I assume you mean .50AE, in which case no, it is not. It is not practical for anything other than showing off to your "gangstas". I've hunted in Alaska for many years and the one time I had to engage a bear, my .44 Magnum brought it down without a problem. Desert Eagles in .50AE are too heavy, powerful, and expensive to be considered practical.

Just to own or do you want to shoot it? My advice, locate somebody owning a S&W 500 and pay them for one shell and go with them to the range so you can shoot it. Then make up your mind about whether or not it is good to own. We are all different and one person's pain is another person's pleasure.
