According to Deutoronomy 22:20-21 we should stone women if they aren't virgins. Christians, your all-loving God wants us to kill wives if they aren't virgins. Do you believe that this makes sense, considering that God is supposed to be all-loving and merciful?

Bobby Jim: Ermm... OK? Nice to see you can't explain it, so you resort to name-calling and random-scripture hunting.

A shame you do not have one one hundredth the intelligence of your namesake, a Russian Jew, much less the literacy to be able to actually read.

Rather ironic since your namesake is an accomplished author. You probably don't understand anything he wrote either.

If you were literate you would realize that the scripture you mention only pertains to women whose husbands do not want them and who have been presented to their husbands as virgins.

Now, if you knew anything about the culture of the times you might realize that the majority of marriages were arranged contracts between families and that this article need only be enforced if the groom or his family so wished it.

A perfect example of a more common way to handle the issue is the story of Mary and Joseph in the New Testament, something you have obviously not read either or you would know this.

To make it really simple, the stoning is punishment for failing to fulfill a legally binding contract between families, a severe crime of the times and culture. A crime that could severely damage the ability to survive of either or both of the families.

Of course you apply your own pre-conceptions of culture and law to this scripture without bothering to even attempt to educate yourself.

I assume you think your pseudo-intellectual culture and attitude is the epitome of advanced civilization as have all arrogant putzes throughout history and therefore all cultures should be judged using your limitless understanding and wisdom.

Do any of the dolts who post scripture specific critiques of the Bible realize how ignorant and illiterate their critique makes them look?

no darl

stoning is no longer acceptable

that book was written a long time ago

dont take everything in the bible to literally! i think its more metaphorical, meaning that a wife should be a virgin when she is married.

i strongly believe in sex AFTER marriage. not 'just becasue its on the bible'. becasue of various good reasons

let me know if you want me to elaborate on that....

God is loving and merciful! He does not condenm, but loves all. it is we humans that turn away from God, stray from the path like lost sheep. but He will always welcome us back when we are truly sorry.

i see your point..it doesnt really make sense...but i believe its a metaphor. also, people those days were really strict on the virgin thing. we must remember that the world changes. living in those times for us would be like living in a different planet!

hardly anyone was eductaed in those days, and leaders made strict rules to keep everyone in place. if they knew that it would be better that a woman was a virgin before marriage, they could make a law about it. if they knew that eating pork could cause disease, they could say 'it is against our religion to eat it!!' therefore, no one would do these things

most of the time, it was for the benefit of the people, but leaders also abused this power...

God bless

Why do people think the laws of the Old Testament matter to Christians? Jesus came and with him he brought the laws of the New Covenant. I believe the New Testament addresses this issue in several places, such as in Ephesians 2:15.

Before Jesus came, one had to atone for one's own sins, and to rebuke sin in the community. It was our fault; and what a hard atonement it was! Sacrificing animals, and other things such as what you mentioned. First of all, keep in mind that as serious as these atonements were, God was worthy. He instructed Abraham to kill his son Isaac, and Abraham started to do it because God is worthy (an angel stopped him, because in his case, it was a test). Second of all, God was being very merciful by allowing a way out of sin, a way for atonement. It was very good of Him to give His people this way out, because He could have very well sent everyone to Hell for all eternity for sinning. But he didn't. He still loved us enough to give us a way out. You can't just sin and not suffer the consequences, that's not fair, and God is a fair God. And as with this situation, He's merciful too.

Then, as I mentioned, Jesus came. He died for us. With that act of love, Jesus brought a new covenant. The only laws in the Old Testament that apply to Christians are the ones that are also mentioned in the New Testament (although I'm sure it's good to follow the neighborly ones not mentioned in the NT).

So do I believe it makes sense, considering that God is supposed to be all-loving and merciful. Yes. Because it could have been a "hell" of a lot worse for us. But He had mercy and provided a way out.

You're going to the old testament, but in the new testament Jesus we learn of the new covenant.
Read John 4:1-26. This woman certainly is no virgin but if you notice Jesus never kills this woman.
That the loving God I serve.

The life of Jesus represents a new covenant with man, and it replaces the old Jewish law that you are talking about.

There are other examples out there as well.

the men of the town must stone her to death for she has committed a disgraceful crime in Irael by being promiscuous while living in her parents home. In this way you will purge this evil from among you. did you read the next verse? If a man is discovered committing adultery both he and the woman must die. In this way you will purge this evil from you. Good thing we don't do this anymore or women would not have to worried about being a virgin cause more men would be dead!

OK in context of the time that book was written it was common practice to stone women who were not virgins when they entered into marriage.
You have to remember in that period of time the man paid good money for a wife who was supposed to be a virgin. If her family lied about her being a virgin when she wasn't it was an affront to the man purchasing her for his wife. A lot like grand theft. So to preserve his honor he or his family was duty bound to kill her.
This practice is still carried on in the middle east today among a lot of the Muslims.

look carefully at what you said..you said wives. now think carefully about that? kill " wives" for not being virgins?
that makes no sense! of course " wives" are not virgins! and no one killed " wives " back in those days either! because they were MARRIED! it was considered a sin if a woman was NOT married and was NOT a virgin!

SHEESH you DIP!

besides in the new testament that no longer holds true. While im sure it isnt in great favor with God to have sex before " marriage" stoning is no longer believed in because of Jesus.
If it was Jesus would have stoned Mary Magdalene.

( snicker) wives.

Deuteronomy is Old Testament and therefore old covenant. Christians are not bound by the laws of the Old Testament.

The Old Testament portrays God as an angry, vengeful, judging male. People often try to create God in their own image. That is what the story of Adam and Eve is about.

prepared marriages aren't any more inevitably non-consensual. in a lot of communities, mothers and fathers manage a wedding ceremony, and then enable the couple to pick no matter if to pass with the help of with it. this isn't rape, of route, as both might want to pick no longer to get married. secondly, the idea of human sacrifice is thoroughly alien to Jews. we under no circumstances, ever do it, and we under no circumstances will. it fairly is why Abraham had this variety of significant challenge at the same time as God advised him to sacrifice Isaac. he knew God hates human sacrifice, so he did not understand what became happening. the rustic of Midian had grown so corrupt and immoral that God wanting to end them continuously. those virgins who were spared were kept as servants interior the houses of the comprehensive adult adult males interior the rustic, to attempt to reform them and do away with the impact of the rustic that they had lived between. those they killed were those who were so steeped in Midianite custom that they could under no circumstances depart it, and that custom became so evil and corrupt that it had to be destroyed.

That was the old testament and that was there custom back then and also keep in mind that it was before the teachings of Jesus Christ. As far as women not waiting to have sex before marriage they're committing a sin against there own body and that in it self is creating your own misery. and men as well. Marriage and sex are a sacred thing. God is mericful and loving. Hope that helps. God bless and peace to you!
