Shmyrna is homeschooled and I read the Bible to her 40 times a day, EVERY day. And yet when I tell her to look up a verse or show me how well she can read Leviticus she just lays there defiantly, refusing to read.

How can I direct her away from this obvious obstinance and make her read?

GreenEyedLilo - That's hysterical! I love it.

Patrick - It brings a tear to her eye as well, especially when I keep her up all night practicing. Oh, it hurts my heart, but we must train up our children correctly!

Haven't you heard of hot-housing? I hope you were reading the good book to her invitero also. The Heretic Dawkins may say that you can't call a child a Christian child or a Muslim child, but surely you should be able to pop them out already reciting with the amazingly advanced techniques now available...

Have you tried a flashcard mobile?! I hope she at least wears armour of god pyjamas - I'm sure they make them with the little feet in and the bottom-flap - how cute!!!

The one where god burns Aaron's sons alive while Aaron watches is a good place to start. Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their burners and sprinkled incense over it. For some bizarre reason, this pissed off the LORD by burning before him a 'different kind of fire' than he had commanded. So god decides to burn them both alive while Aaron stands there and watches: "So fire blazed forth from the LORD's presence and burned them up, and they died there before the LORD. Then Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD meant when he said, `I will show myself holy among those who are near me. I will be glorified before all the people.' " And Aaron was silent." -- Lev 10:1-3

She can't be an atheist because then she would have read the whole Bible already, so don't worry, all she needs to do is listen to your and your pastor's interpretation of the Bible and she will fit right in with the rest of the flock!

Tell her about the evil Atheist's that hide under her cot, and love to eat little babies for lunch. The only way for the Atheist to begone is to recite the 10 commandments in aramaic - backwards.

True story--I was seven when my kid brother came home from the hospital, and I tried teaching him how to read. And he just sat there like a gurgling week-old lump that couldn't even focus! So I informed my mother that she had brought home a stupid baby and needed to take him back to the hospital to exchange him.

My mom didn't go for it, but that is my mom's problem. Maybe you can have better luck! :-D

patience.
And don't force it so much.
40 times? I can tell you're dedicated, but slow down. She might want to do the opposite when she gets older. And it might drive you crazy if you continue to become frustrated.
patience.

You know what that means. It's time for Hosea 13:16!

"[The House of Thrice Baked] shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up."

I may be paraphrasing a little bit. But it's the spirit of the passage that counts.

Well this is an obvious show of defiance.. my suggestion is to buy the bible on tape and make her listen to it all day long.. that'll teach her.
