I was in a white blues band that is now very highly revered in the blues community worldwide. Anyway, I left the band after moving...long story.
Anyway, we went to the South Side of Chicago one night to a corner bar. We were the only white cats in the place. Our first set went icy cold. A few claps here and there. Normally, back in our home town, the place would've just started to come apart.
We opened our next set with "Last Two Dollars" and the ice turned into magic the rest of the night. Johnnie Taylor saved our asses from being thrown out in the street. Needless to say, it's one of my southern fried soul favorites. More R&B than blues, but Johnnie's voice is the only one I've ever heard do it justice.
However, a good acquaintance of a band named Root Doctor out of Michigan does a great cover of it on their "Long Time Coming" CD. Pick it up if you get a chance.

My ignorance is starting to show. I heard of Johnny Taylor but didn't know he was a blues singer. I thought that he was R&B. I never heard of this song but if its recommended by you I know that it is good.
