If you are in the UK, contact Immigration Advisoy Service - they are a large charity who will be able to advise you and track your friend down.

If someone is in a UK Immigration Removal Centre, normally they have access to phones and can call out. I think the give them a small amount of credit, after that you can buy a calling card and give them the pin number to use.

If you know where they are, you can call the Removal Centre and ask to be put through to them. If you call Immigration, quoting the Home Office Reference number, date of birth etc, they might let you know where they are being held. If you have any paperwork for the person, the Home Office reference number is usually the first letter of their family name plus seven numbers. A port reference number will do instead, but NASS numbers are less useful.

For Immigration, the Manchester number is 0161 888 4100; Harmondsworth IRC is 0208 283 3850. Lots of useful numbers and info at http://www.biduk.org/

Also, try http://www.ncadc.org.uk/

Good luck.

IF s/he is detained in the UK, then you need to make a social visit appointment with the detention centre. I'd also get a solicitor involved because sooner or later the person will have removal directions set against him/her. The UKIS have to provide them with reasons for detention (IS91R) and a monthly report to justify detention otherwise it is unlawful.

Contact USCIS and check if the person has been already deported or not. If he is still in US you can visit him in the jail that feds are holding him at.
