Without going into details here, watts are not an issue in this choice. Sound quality is what you are looking for and your ears will be the best guide for you since what sounds best to you is best for you. Home Theater in a Box systems are pretty close in quality. Besides sounding awful, the really cheap brands are unreliable. You'll be replacing it soon. With the more reliable brands like Pioneer, biggest weaknesses are wimpy subwoofers that bottom out easily and tiny main speakers that lack performance in the lower mid-range and high frequencies. Pioneer is a decent choice but I recommend you consider Onkyo, Kenwood, and Sony (in that order). I would buy any of those three brands of HTIB over Pioneer. Be sure to test the different systems with CD's and DVD's that have a lot of bass. Hunt for bargains on the Internet. The reliable brand that sounds best to you is the one to buy whatever anyone else says. If you are willing to spend more than an HTIB costs let us know. There is a whole world of better options. Just tell us your budget.

Hi there.First of all how much are you prepared to spend. How big is the room you are putting the system in. I would not bother with a Home Theatre In a Box, unless you just want sound effects. People expect to have quality for less and less money . It is just not possible at a couple of hundred bucks.Even some individual components are cheap but they do not perform very well. The trend at the moment is to cram more and more circuitry into Receivers at the expense of quality. They only have one power supply.for everything.

Buy the best CD/DVDCD/ Player you can afford.(that means you will have a good source to start the ball rolling) .Buy the best Interconnects you can afford to join the Source to your Amplifier. The type of Amp you buy will determine the quality of the sound that comes out of your speakers. If you decide on a Receiver get a 5.1 as there is less circuitry to upset the signal. Most brands are about the same when it comes to sound quality (not quanity) NAD Receivers put sound quality first which most critics agree with. They are naturally more expensive to have this feature. The Preamplifier /Power Amplifier(s) sections of the Receiver are very important because their job is to faithfully amplify the signal from the source. If the Pre-Amp section of the Receiver introduces any distortion of the signal it will be passed onto the Power Amps and amplified even more This amplified distorted signal will be passed onto the speakers.and the speakers will change that distorted signal into distorted sound. The speakers can't improve on the distorted signal from the Power Amps they can only reproduce it.

So the bottom line is if you want speakers to deliver the best sound they are capable of you have to have a good signal from the source to the speakers Any degredation of the signal will be pased on to the speakers which will be mixed with the audio.

Pioneer is excellent value for the price. Pioneer Elite is one of the best rated systems out. I would recommend the TSX 82 from Pioneer Elite, It has great features and sound quality.
