The number is as many people have stated before an identification. Each box of balls comes with 4 sleeves of 3 as you are probably aware of. Each sleeve contains 3 balls with the same number. So you end up with 3 number 1-4's. So if you and your buddy happen to pull out the same number, grab a different sleeve to find a different number.

They are just a way of telling one player's ball from another. In a dozen, you get numbers 1 through 4. That way, even if all of the members of a foursome play the same brand of ball, they can each play a different "number". Most good players also make some sort of customized pen mark on their ball to further eliminate any confusion.

it's just a way for you to keep track of your ball. So if there are several balls near by you know which is yours. Also others know in case there is an argument.
