You could have the beginning symptoms of a bunion. Has your big toe started to turn inward toward the next toe? Or have you noticed swelling in the joint behind the big toe?

The symptoms of bunions include:

Swelling or enlargement of the metatarsophalangeal joint at the base of the big toe.
Displacement of the big toe toward the other toes.
Joint redness.
Joint pain.
Skin irritation over the bunion.

Bunions and their symptoms develop gradually. They are sometimes confused with symptoms of gout, but gout pain comes on suddenly and can be more severe than bunion pain. Gout pain tends to occur in episodes, while bunion pain is more constant. Unlike a bunion, gout does not usually cause joint deformity.

Bunions are often caused by wearing shoes that are too tight, especially high heel shoes.

Depending on how long you've been having this problem, it could be either one of the above. Gout can be treated with medication and diet. Bunions can be treated with proper footwear, anti-inflammatory meds, and in severe cases, surgery.
