My parents own a children's resale clothing shop, and because of that, hear some pretty bizarre stories from the moms that come in to shop. I was absolutly shocked and appalled by a mother who worked at a day-care, and said that if parents sign a note, then their child may go outside and go to the bathroom.
.......What happened to the toilet?!?!?!?! What is the thought process of the parents training these children to go outside?!?! I mean, isn't the term "potty-training"?
Is there anyone else out there that has a problem with this, or maybe can explain when these people were dropped on their heads?

I dont get it! WHY??

Why in the WORLD would a daycare even send home a note asking if its "ok" that their child goes to the bathroom OUTSIDE!?! And WHY would ANY parent agree to that kind of behavior!?!

As a parent, I HAVE LET my child go potty outside at times... like there was one time when my son was FIRST learning how to go potty and we were in the car and simply could NOT get to a restroom in time, so when we were close to a wooded area, I pulled my car over and led him to a private place where he could "take care of business." And OF COURSE, when we have been camping, they can go potty outside (I mean, where ELSE are they supposed to go when you are camping in the woods! LOL... PLUS, as my kids see it, thats part of the "fun" of camping! ha ha)

Also when I FIRST started TRAINING one of the "techniques" that I used in the summer was to let my children run around naked in our PRIVATE and GATED backyard (where NO ONE can see them). I also had a "baby toilet" out there for them to use! With my son, I had to QUICKLY "re-evaluate" the situation b/c he was having too much "fun" peeing on things outside! LOL So, we stopped that! But with my daughter since girls dont have anything to "aim" at... she doesnt LIKE it when the pee trickles down her legs and gets all over her... so even at 2, she now RUNS to the potty trying to get there "in time" to at least FINISH her business! Its been a GREAT way to help HER learn when its time to go potty and WHERE to go!! But now that she has learned THAT part of it... we have moved the potty back inside and next to the BIG toilet where it belongs!

However, I would NOT EVER sign a note saying that someone could TEACH my child that its OK to go potty outside v/s in the RESTROOM that is AVAILABLE!

I think that the woman running the daycare needs to seriously reconcider her line of work! Does she even HAVE any children of her own? Are the children at LEAST going somewhere PRIVATE where they are not "exposing" themselves to the teacher OR any other students?? I would start to wonder about my childs well-being at a place like that! Is the teacher lazy, some kind of freak or predator... or is she simply STUPID!?!

I swear.. some people just dont "GET" what it means to be a parent and what they are TEACHING children by "letting" them do things like that!

It seems to me that it would make potty training confusing to the children. I am by no means a child expert, but i would get the toilet thing established first... and then, let the children know... if they absolutely cannot hold it any longer, that outside is an option...
i wouldn't say i have a "problem" with it, but i would NOT sign the form for it to be okay for my son to go outside.

What a crack up. I agree that potty training should involve a potty or toilet or some such thing. Although I have an outdoor potty training story involving and actual train. My husband told my toddler it was OK to pee on a bush if you "really had to go". A week later the same toddler pee-d on a toy bush in a model train display at the botanical gardens. EEEK! Although, parents who strictly toilet train aren't completely immune from such humiliation, at least when the kid decides to pee in the bathroom displays at Home Depot ... the observers will assume they know where to go.

When my son was potty training, he wanted to stand up to pee like me. Well his aim was not to good. he pissed all over the bathroom. Important thing was he was going on his own. I brought him outside in the backyard, I gave him a tree to take care of. Told him every time he had to pee, He was to water the tree. I told him if he did not take care of the tree it would get sick. My son was potty trained by time he was 2. He did a really good job of watering the tree until it got cold.

kat-j reminds me of mr De-Martino off Daria...

I think its inappropriate and confusing to the child, Kat j is right about getting the "feel" of being wet, but seriously, going outside is un-hygenic and just pointless. If at home, its a different story, because thats the home, its private. But at a child-care centre, children are being taught how to behave socially, and peeing in public is not socially kosher,. Its just not.

I have seen one of my friends teach her son that outside and I asked her "why?". She said it was to teach him to react when he had to go but he was scared of pottys and toilets. I had considered it but it seem so primal to me. The daycares in my area would really freak out about that. I would rather spend the time getting my child used to the potty instead of him dropping his pants at a party or in public.

I agree. Bathroom - is where you clean your body. Toilet - is where you do No1 & No2.... Potty training is training to do No1 &No2 in a pot instead of just in a nappy. Potties are used because usually the toilet is too big for little legs & bottoms.

I can't understand why the word "toilet" isn't used when it should be. TOILET is a word that should be used more often to stop confusion.
