Yes they can, but do not use alot of weight at once work gradually up in it so you do not hurt yourself or overextend any ligaments or muscles.

They will help make your punches and kicks faster, just stretch before and after and do not over due yourself

Know your limits and yes they can be effective in increasing your speed. i used to use them when preparing for fights.

If you watch the latest Rocky 6 he uses weights to help build strenght and speed.

I would ask your teacher first.

If you were one of my students, I would recommend it. But, not really to make you faster. The feeling is mostly just temporary... there are other benefits from wearing the weights.
However, I would get you to try it, and warn you that you must be careful not to overextend your kicks and punches when wearing the weights. This is fairly easy to do, so you will need to be extra careful. Once you remove the weights you will feel much lighter and faster so, again, be careful not to overextend.

The first answer was short but fairly correct. To get faster, work on more specific speed training. Some weight training can help (but there are a lot of types of weight training). Any exercises designed for fast-twitch muscle development, etc.

Good luck with your training!

The problem with ankle and wrist weights is that they throw off your balance by putting weight on the very ends of your limbs, strain the joints in ways they are not supposed to, and provide the resistance in the wrong direction to increase strength or speed.

Think about it, the weight is pulling toward the ground vertically, but you want the speed of your punch or kick to go away from you horizontally. Unless, of course, you're planning on doing all of your punching or kicking lying on your back.

Bruce Lee in "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do" theorized that it was relaxing the muscles and only flexing the ones needed the instant before impact that gained him speed. He also emphasized that effective speed can be gained by keeping your opponent guessing by being able to throw attacks from multiple angles and not telegraphing them. The proof is in the pudding with him because I don't think I've seen anyone faster.

Ankle weights can help a little but you should not do the kicks fast so half speed, half power shadow kick boxing or just easy kicking and combinations will give you a little more speed and power. Billy Blanks used to use bicycle inner tube tires tied to his legs for kicking. Now they have elastic bands for this that you can buy that work very well. Check out some of the explosive type exercises and exercise routines. I have found them to be better than the use of the weights.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?

What is it you're attempting to achieve? If you desire to develope muscle, sure they're going to support. Use them even as practising varieties or kada's do not opt for pace. Go gradual, you can think it extra. I could now not put on them even as stretching, going for walks or running or at the bag, the sunshine bag is used to develope pace and coordination, the heavy bag is nice for timing and energy, and many others. You will develope essentially the most energy by way of pace, coordination, timing and an exceptional stance. To so much muscle will gradual you down and truthfully rob you of energy. A toned frame will achieve you pace and energy then to achieve superb energy you are going to then have to be taught to loosen up!

There is a high possibility that you'll hyper extend your joints.
I had an injury after kicking with ankle weights.

It is still best to use resistance bands tied to some railing or the wall. This is wat I do when I do training a month or so just before any tournaments.

It can help however I wouldn't advise using any heavier than 5 pounds on each ankle or wrist. If you use too much weight you can end up damaging your joints.
