Well I've never done it, but I've read about it - you spend a short amount of time (probably five minutes or less) talking to a complete stranger - then you switch to another person. You spend those five minutes engaging in small talk, etc.

At the end of the night, you make a list of the people you like, and if it's a mutual attraction, you get the other person's phone number. If you've ever seen the movie "Hitch," that's a perfect example of speed dating.
