A few weeks ago windows did an update, thats the only thing i can think of that changed on my PC. Since then XP tries to load but stops and goes to a black screen saying a recent change in the computer may be preventing windows from loading. It has 3 different versions of safe mode i can run and the option to start with the last known good configuration. last known config option doesn't work. I swapped hard drives from another computer and it worked. So there's something wrong with my windows. Booting with my XP disk, i selected install windows, then the repair console. Once that ran I could start my PC in any of the safe modes. But now I'm stuck, I've run several virus checks, all clean.
Does anyone have a suggestion as my next course of action?

Restart your computer in safe mode and reset your computer to before you updated.

I had a similar issue and it ended up being a faulty RAM chip. I just pulled each one out anf rebooted system and finally with one in it worked. I replaced the RAM and have had no problems since. I have heard other people suggest taking out the RAM and cleaning the metal contacts with a pencil eraser. Worth a try, I guess....
