I read on yahoo this week that 68% of britons feel there's too many immigrants in the UK,... what are you views on it? Do you think that Tony Blair has been a total idiot when it came to relaxing the border controls for the British Isles?
It said that the rules had caused an underlying set of issues, namely racial tension; something we'd not have had if Tony hadn't been a complete muppet.... right? wrong?

This is a great question and you know something? We all probably feel like criminals for discussing it, don't we? I mean, we all want to get along with our ethnic friends but when the 'Britishness' of our country starts to fade, we quite naturally get concerned. The amazing thing about this is that we, as Brits, have no place in their countries and certainly would not get social benefits or food vouchers, accommodation help or whatever. This country needs to place constraints on immigrants and prioritise housing, jobs, welfare, health to the great British people as a principle. That way, we wouldn't feel second class. I feel that everyone has to earn their place on our society and not be able to simply claim it on an application form.

I completely agree. We basically proceed to exist a small island in assessment to a pair different worldwide places, we've not got room for plenty extra. Plus it sickens me that immigrants can declare £250 yet people who stay right here and characteristic labored all of their existence won't be in a position to get diddly squat. and that they get properties far extra ordinary than the indigenous British human beings. this is not any longer honest, signing directly to the ecu Union develop into the worst element Britain ever did. Immigration needs to end and it needs to end NOW!

Don't forget that it's 68% of people who were surveyed who said this. Survey the entire country, and not just one hotspot area where you know you'll get the attention grabbing headline you need to sell your newspaper, and you'll get a vastly different answer.

And the recent survey seems to be talking about Eastern Europeans more than anything else. In this case it has nothing to do with Blair, these people are EUROPEAN and thus have as much right to roam Europe as we Britons do.

Funny how a lot of welll educated lardy-da's like to go poncing off in their 'gap year' to work in bars etc in Thailand and Australia and Europe for a year but that is known as just 'travelling'. Someone comes to the UK to do it and it's 'immigration' - and that IS the case, because Eastern Europeans are here for the short term only, then it's back home they go with their pay.

If it's taking jobs away from people, then that's utter BS. They're all working in industries, i.e. factories or construction, where there are always tons of jobs going.

The simple fact is that not ONE UK citizen need be without a job if they really WANT (not need) one, it's just that our dole-wallers are either too lazy to get jobs or they don't want to work in factories etc, and now they are being humiliated and exposed because some of the hardest workers on the planet are temporarily visiting the UK to undertake some of the most menial and tedious jobs to earn a little bit of pay.

And as for factory workers, may I ask how exactly we in the UK are not taking jobs away from workers in other countries, when we have factories such as the megalith Nissan car plant in Sunderland that employs thousands of people, when really it should be guys in Japan doing those jobs? And that's just one example of many, my mother works in a factory for an American company. What about the unemployed in trailer-parks in Florida who she is stealing a job from?

As for those who insist immigrants should have knowledge of English (fair point) but also knowledge of maths and the countries history etc. J*sus H Christ.....half the kids in the UK don't have any level of intelligence in these areas, why should some foreign factory workers need it?

Unlike all your answerers here, I don't know enough to say for sure whether there are too many immigrants.

I do know that there are still jobs going begging in this country and we need to fill those jobs. There is also a skills gap in many areas and immigration can help in those areas, as it has in the NHS.

Enoch Powell had all the answers? When he was a Conservative? Or when he was an Ulster Unionist? Or when he urged people to vote Labour? The man couldn't even decide which party he felt closest too. "Enoch was right" is too often a mantra chanted by those who have no understanding of what he actually said.

68% of Britons feel there's too many? Which Britons? What's the source of that statistic? This issue is such a polarising one that you can easily skew the statistics by choice of sample.

Blair has not relaxed border controls. The only change has been the introduction to the EU of new nations, whose citizens have right of work and abode here, just as you have in their countries. British people seem to think that Britons should be able to travel and work anywhere, but that this should not be extended to foreigners.

Some of your answerers display gross ignorance.

MICHAEL P - Why do you feel a second class citizen? Have you actually looked at the benefits available to most immigrants (i.e. sod all) and the benefits available to British citizens? Or have you just believed what the Daily Mail / BNP tell you? These people mostly want to come to UK to work because wages here are high, so your 'benefits scrounging' argument is hollow.

I usually find that when people claim they are treated as second class citizens, it's far more to do with their personal qualities than anything else. No one treats me as a second class citizen in UK. And people who churn out this cliche are usually not able to mount an argument about why thay feel treated like this.

BLOND_LOGIC questions whether she has freedom of speech in this country. What does she think she's doing here? Can she cite ONE SINGLE INSTANCE of her wanting to say something (other than slander and incitement to crime) and not being allowed to?

Too many people claim their freedom of speech is being limited, when what they actually object to is other people telling them that their views are stupid, inconsistent and, at times, racist.

Many people believe that their Britishness is under threat. It's sad that their view of Britishness depends on everybody being the same as them, dressing the same as them, speaking the same as them. My culture is not under threat, but it has assimilated customs, food, language from overseas. I think my culture has been enriched by this, not diminished. Sure, the England of the 1960s that I grew up in has long gone. But this is far more the fault of technology than any social changes.

Immigration should not be uncontrolled. But those controls should be based on the needs of the nation, not the prejudices of some of its population. I agree that speaking English is a vital skill in UK and perhaps we should make the ability to speak English (or Welsh!) a pre-requisite for citizenship.

Blaming Blair is easy - he's made so many mistakes, why not add this one? But it's also lazy, it doesn't require you to look any deeper at the problem. And it's wrong in this case. Blair may be a muppet, but if we'd not had Blair, the problems would be the same.

I am sick and bored to answer another stupid question like this one, but I'll try... in a bit different way than usual.
Any proof of immigrants abusing your social welfare system, health service, council housing? What percentage of patients on the NHS waiting lists are immigrants? Are you able to show us ANY evidence of that?
I am the one which you, guys from the BNP-Nazi like brigade hate most at the moment - I am from Eastern Europe, namely Poland. In fact, this is Central Europe, but I know it is far too much to ask you to undesrtand the difference, regarding your limited education and intelligence. Guess what? I have decent job, according to my qualifications, I do not live in council house nor I get any sort of benefits.I do not want them, but apart from that my salary is too high for being eligible. I am paid the same money as my British colleagues. So...?

i for one feel that my way of life as a white english born christian is under threat and i do not expect any help from a government hell bent on practicing posivitive discrimination, keeping our borders wide open and ready to hand all control over to brussels

I think we've haven't been picky enough over which immigrants to let into this country.... we need to tighten up on immigration for a while until we sort out our domestic problems.

Border control should be taken overseas.

We should have a tight 'pass course' for them, like many other countries have, for example:
They must be able to tick at least 7 or 8 things listed below.
1) Be able to speak, write & understand basic English
2) Understand basic maths. (test given)
3) Have a degree, that is equilivent to the UK's standard.
4) Have money already put aside to set up their own business, (residences dependent on business staying open for three years.)
5) Have money already saved to buy a home here. (£100,000 approx)
6) They must be in one of the profession, or trades, listed below:
a)________
b)________ *This list changes on a 3 month
c)________ basis.
d)________
7) Have enough money to support themselves for at least 6 months... in which time you must find full time employment and begin paying taxes.
8) They must have been offered a full time work position in the uk which they intend on accepting before they arrive in the UK.
9) They must have 'direct' family who have been born in the uk or have resided here for longer than 5 years.
10) They must have been married to a UK citizen for longer than six months.
11) Must learn materials about the history and culture of Britain, and pass a written test, plus multi choice question paper, before you arrive in the UK.
12) You have owned a business in the UK for 7 years.
13) You are from one of the countries listed below.
a)______
b)______ *These change every 3 months.
c)______
14) You must not have a criminal record.

ADDED:
I've heard some people below suggest that 'immigrants do the jobs that lazy dole wollers won't do'. Well don't you think that this is a poor excuse.... we should be dealing with this problem, we should be training our own dole wollers to do these jobs and explain that if they are serial dole wollers and theres no reason why they can't work, then they won't get the dole..... I mean come on, what wrong with giving them a road brush and making them sweep the streets for their £45 a week. Giving these jobs to immigrants is just sweeping the problem under the carpet.

The arguement that we go to other countries 'travelling' so why shouldn't they come here too. I went 'travelling' as a student..... I also paid 10%-20% more tax than the residence in certain places, and I received no benefits, no housing, or cash. Any money I made there, I also spent there, before I came back. Oh and I didn't spend longer than a month in any one country.

Yes and no. Sorry, but the main problem is integration, not immigration.

Hard as it is to believe, immigration has got harder. As a result, there is going to be problems for UK farmers to get strawberries picked. Why? Because there are too few immigrants here to work, and because UK nationals are not doing the work instead. (See the link)

The problem with some migrants and the descendents here is not that they are here, but that there are some who refuse to 'integrate.' You do not have to go out and get pi$$ed every Friday night to be 'integrated' but you do have to respect that if you are an immigrant, that you are part of a society that has chosen to welcome you here, and it is only right to try to become part of it, learn the language etc.

Otherwise, if you do not want to become part of this great nation, leave.

Tony Blair was not only a lap dog to America, he's been one to the E.U too they are the ones telling us what we can and cant do now we are a full member to the E.U, but unlike most other countries who just ignore what Brussels Say's our government just go along with it and we get taken for fools. The amount of immigrants coming into this country is far too great, that's why our public service's are in such a poor state, and us Brits are picking up the bill for it, as well as all the money paid into the EU, God our Government and leaders are such fools, but they are making fools of us too.
