if its a toy dog and has a yard it will probably be okay. As long as they take him out to be socialized.

if its a higher energy breed the dog will just find other ways to get out the extra energy like destroying the house.

if its a lower energy breed and older dog it might be okay but I would expect its lifespan would be shortened from obesity.

Its all up to the owner. I would say a walk never hurt anyone.

It depends. A dog that is never walked, but it exercised with through other means and/or played with vigorously should have no problem. A dog that is never walked, never exercised, will more than likely have a serious case of bordom. That leads to destrustion, behavioural problems, and health issues. The dog will end up being more than the owner can handle.

Out of the four dogs I have right now, none of them have ever been taken for a formal "walk". And they are all high energy breeds (Boxers, Springer Spaniel). Never had a problem with them. Why? The Boxers play, with each other, almost constantly. Add that to vigorous play sessions with me, whether it be running around like we're nuts or a match of 'throw the ball and see who can get it first', and they're perfectly tired out & content. The Springer can't play with the other dogs (too serious, dominant, and old for Boxer goofs). But to balance that, his play session with me lasts much longer and it seems I'm always taking him for a swim. I have no other option though. We have no fence, the dogs have to be taught the driveway and road are off-limits, and taking them for walks ruins that training. Been there, done that.

As long as the dog is properly exercised, it's not a problem. Exercise does not automatically read walk. Good socialization doesn't automatically mean going for walks either. It's all about replacing that activity, that meeting people aspect, with another method. Entirely possible.

Well our dog was never walked because i wasnt able to walk it. He wasnt overweight but he wasnt as fit as he should have been. I would defiinitly take the dog for a walk but if you cant make sure if you have a garden that you let him out to run around for a while so as he doesnt just become an overweight dog that wont do anything. My dog always got running around in our garden by the way and incase anyone who thinks i was being cruel to my dog i wasnt i was attacked one day by a huge dog coming home form my daily walk with my dog and i got hurt and nothing was done about it and i wouldnt walk my dog again i was not going to put my dog at risk plus he got plenty of excersize in my garden

It can be harmful. They need to exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
My last dog was a German Shepard and she used to want to walk 4 miles a day. She got a great enjoyment out of it and I met some real nice people in the area that we lived. Made some friends walking her.

A dog that never got walked is asking for trouble. Health problems like obesity and arthritis will almost always result. Behaviour problems up the wazoo. Its almost impossible to properly socialize a dog if its never walked. A poorly socialized dog will be fearful of strangers, possibly aggressive towards other dogs. All that inevitibly leads to someone getting bit, which almost always leads to nothing but trouble and usually the dog ends up paying the price for human inaction.......PUT TO SLEEP.

If you have a backyard to let the dog out into, and give it plenty of attention and exercise through means other than walking, then I don't think walking a dog is necessary.

They do love it though!

I've got a healthy 2 yr old pug that I cannot walk outside in the heat of summer, or the freezing winter. But, he does have a 20' hall that we spend time in playing fetch! Animals do need exercise just like we do.

The dog would probably have behavior issues and maybe weight issues depending on how much it eats weight problems as well.
