Some of these answers are ridiculous.
Pitbulls DO NOT have a LOCKING JAW -- its a myth.
Pitbulls DO NOT have a chemical imbalance.
I laughed so hard at the chemical imbalance.
Read up on your facts people; its your ignorance thats destroying this amazing breed:

Don't listen to what anyone says about your dog. Its all the hype in the media that makes people think that every pitbull you see will want to eat you. I was bit by a Lab and did it end up on the news? Nope. If I called the news station or newspaper .. I would have gotten a million questions like "well, what were you doing to the lab? you must have done something -- labs dont bite people!" .. yeah okay. Statistics show that APBT and Staffordshire Terriers have a HIGHER temperment testing rate than Labs. Beat that.
I love Staffies, they are my favorite breed. (well, they're up there) and hope to own one in the future. Just ignore people and what they say. Thats what I've learned about life -- and on YA. People are ALWAYS going to be rude and ignorant about things.
ANY dog has the chance to be mean if provoked. Its all about how its raised, babes. Like another answer said, if you put me in a cage and beat me all the time -- heck, I'd want to bite you too! Put a Lab/Golden/Retriever in the SAME position and you'll get a vicious dog too.
Hugs to your dog!

Because a lot of daft and pathetic people raise pitbulls for fighting other dogs, so that the pitbull becomes vicious towards anything he perceives as weaker than himself and below him in the pack. This is NOT the dog's fault, but unfortunately pitbulls and staffs have become image dogs, and only a certain type of person seems to have them (aggressive types with a bad attitude wanting to scare people). Dogs only know what their beloved master teaches them, and some owners of a cartain type of breed are not only irresponsible, but downright criminal and should not be allowed to care for an animal. Why don't they fight their own fights? Creeps.
That's why people like you that treat the dog with love get dumped into the "nasty owner" bin.

The answer is simple, it depends on how the dog is raised. Some Pit-bulls will tear you apart and some will lick you to death. But you have to remember that these small strong dogs were originally hunters, then bred as fighting dogs and have that tendency in their being. Also like the youth of today you only ever hear of the bad ones and never the good.
With any dog you have to remember that it has a nasty side which if treated badly or pushed to far, like humans, it will snap and attack.
I have seen bad Pit-bulls which I have had to shoot and I have also met the most gentlest of Pit-bulls that I would let guard a baby.
Hope it helps, take it you have a PB

It's the power of the press. One of the friendliest breeds around has been given a bum rap to sell advertising. In addition, inner city youths have decided that they are "bad" dogs and tease them mean so they can brag about their killer dog. This is probably because of their very strong jaws and they are the only breed that can "saw" with their teeth while in a grip making them deadly in a dog fight. Even the nicest of dogs can be abused into a killer dog and they have better tools then other breeds and the press has jumped on this (greater damage when bitten).
As far as vicious breeds (by percentage of bites to numbers), number one is the Cocker Spaniel, #2 = Toy/Min Poodle, and #3 = Chiawawa (sp). German Shepherd Dogs had the bum rap prior to Pit Bulls and they are slightly below median!
Many people are gullible or just plain stupid and believe everything they hear or read. That is the real reason.

Christy, as you can tell from all the answers you are receiving may people think pit bulls are dangerous dogs. I Firmly belive that no breed of dog is inherently dangerous. It is unfortunate that there have been overwhelming media reports showing supposed pit bulls in a negative light. However IF you will take the time to look at the actual statistics Pit bulls are the least likely to injure a person. Check out my sources and try to make your own informed opinions.

There are bad dogs in any breed, a dog`s behaviour is largely dependent on the owner. I`ll exclude you from this but you only have to look at many of the owners of pit bulls to understand why there have been proportionately more attacks by pit bulls.Although you do have to look at what they were bred for, it`s like putting a loaded gun in the hand of an idiot.

I have a 17 year old tiny dog. The only time both she and I have been attacked was by a Pitbull - I can tell you, it was really frightening. The Pitbull ought to have been on a lead but was not. I snatched up my dog (she is 9 inches high) and the Pitbull kept on snarling and leaping up and I had to yell to the owners to call it off. It seems that their temperament can suddenly switch from placid to nasty and it is the owners' responsibility to keep them under contol, as with all dogs.

The media has put a bad image on dogs by showing the result of what the breed can do. But let's be honest all dog breeds can be vicious from time to time.
Some might be more aggressive that others, but each dog is individual.

Because it's more interesting news to hear about a pitbull attacking than a pomeranian, or any other dog. I too have faced this with my rotti/staffi cross. Just uninformed people. I will stop and tell them how wonderful my dog is!
Did anyone realize that Helen Keller had a Pit? It was, look it up. Very interesting who owned/owns Pits

They arent vicious. Its the fact if the owners vicious.
If the owner trains it vicious and it turns on them
its their fault. People dont get this. Pit bulls are
innocent. If some on put me in a cage, kicked me & junk. Id turn on them two.
Ignore the person or tell them to mind their own buisness
obviously they dont enjoy their life so they want to make your
and your dogs.
