It seems Doppler beat me to the answer, which is indeed right.

If you are careening at 300 kilometers an hour, the last thing you really want is to be shot down before you complete your suicide run - not only would it be a waste of your life, but the person/ persons behind the plan will be none-too-happy either.

In those days what they called a "helmet" was not a helmet by today's standards. It was fleece lined leather, purely for warmth, not impact protection.

Did you hear about the Jewish Kamikaze pilot? He crashed his plane into his brothers scrapyard.

they didn't they wear a cloth head band that has the Japanese flag on there heads they put them on before there one way mission of suicide when they crash there explosive filled planes in to American boats. Kamikaze is Japanese for "divine wind."

That's where their radio earphones were located. They still had to hear their instructions while they were flying.

What I wonder is if whether or not they wore "Depends" when they took off on their one-way missions? I think that would've been practical, don't you?

So they won't get knocked out before they complete their mission. An unconscious pilot can't aim the plane.
