making out aggressively really did break the ice.

Go for walks! Walking through a park will make comfortable silence more easy and less awkward. And a nice opportunity for hand holding (if your both into that, sicko's ha ha just kidding)
Avoid JUST going to the movies. Movies leaves little room for conversation and if you talk during movies you need to be slapped. If you see a movie and follow it by getting smoothies at a cafe, then you'll both be able to at least create a conversation about what you just watched. Was it what you expected? Did you like the story line? Was the girl hot?
I'd say group dates would ease the pain of awkward silence, but group dates can sometimes lead to you talking with your girlfriend the whole time and the two guys chatting about boxing. You know what I'm saying?
And also take into consideration that if the awkwardness doesn't go away, maybe there's no chemistry between you two. :/

Yes. Avoid the movies, because it's 2 hours of sitting next to each other and not saying a thing. Go for walks or go see something that neither of you have seen before. Talk. The more you know about this person, the more little inside jokes you guys will share and the more you'll have to fill up that conversation gap and all the tension that comes with it.

Hmmmm. I've been married for a long time now so maybe I don't remember. But, I don't recall ever feeling awkward with some one I was dating, even on the first date or two. I had met boys who ask me out that I felt awkward around, but I turned them down. I think if you feel awkward, your inner self is trying to tell you something. Have you ever heard of "Go by your gut feeling". You shouldn't date any one you're not comfortable with.

my dad is recently divorced and has just started dating. he is actually going on a date tomorrow and they are going ice skating. sounds like fun to me.
try to think of things where there will be lots of action or something to focus on. that way if there is a lull in the conversation it won't seem so awkward. maybe a sporting event (not much fun for you, but he might like it), renting a movie to watch at home, making a meal together, going on a bike ride at the park, or attending a performing arts event (local colleges always have something going on-theater, dance, etc.-and the shows are pretty cheap).

You are right, it is very common early in a relationship. Try talking and find something that both of you enjoy doing.

Hard to know what to you to do or not to do, but find something that you both love to do. My boyfriend and I both have annual passes to Disneyland, we have a BLAST there, or going to the beach together, I read and sunbathe and he surfs. No awkwardness, just togetherness.
Find things that will make you both comfortable and eventually you'll be comfortable with each other too. :)
Luck.
