well, I believe that it is the life line of the fetus while in it's mothers womb...the umbilical cord is connected to the belly button and the placenta, so I guess you do really need it. Without it, I don't think you would be alive :)

You ought to a little research on human reproduction. The belly button, or umbilicus, is the point where the umbilical cord attaches to the fetus. It is a tube through which nutrients are pumped from the mother into the fetus.

I had an aunt who had something wrong with her umbilicus and the doctor sealed it up, so when she got older, there was no sign of a naval.

After the umbilical cord detaches you are left with a belly button. From then on it serves as a lint catcher, a site for a piercing, and for some people it's an erotic zone.

The belly button is started out as in umbilical cord ( cord that connects fetus to mother when pregnant) and then it is cut off when the baby is born.

When you are in your mothers womb, you have to be connected to her to get your nourishment. Your belly button is the plug in point for your life-support system.

its only used when you are in the womb for feeding and nutriens to get to you. once you are born you dont reall need it.they can even move it around in plastic surgery.like if you get a tummy tuck, they make you a new one, just to look "normal"

No, you never need it after you are born, and your umbilical cord is cut. It just sits there.

It has no purpose now but it gave you life in your mothers womb. (i.e. umbilical cord)
