It all depends on what it is that dropped. If it's like an M&M or something like that, I think it's fine. But if it's something like pasta, or a few peas, I think it is gross. I don't know why, that's just how I think.

No, not at all. I usually eat what I've dropped as long as it isn't stale yet and isn't covered in cat hairs; if I find a peanut and I had peanuts yesterday I'll eat it after 24 hours, if I can't remember when I last had them it's probably going to taste awful.

And if I drop something sticky it's probably going to be fuzzy even if I get it within the second. I really don't care about the germs, a few germs are good for our immune system, and especially at home I'm pretty sure I've already built up a resistance against the germs on my floor. However I don't like the feel of cat hairs in my mouth so that's usually the deciding factor.

For the germs it makes NO difference if it's been on the floor 1 second, 3, 5 or 30 seconds. However, as the source shows, being too clean isn't even good for us. As long as it isn't fuzzy, just eat it.

Depends completely on what they're eating it off of. When food drops on a surface the germs are transferred almost immediately. If something fell off of a plate onto a counter or something it wouldn't bother me one bit, if it fell onto the ground then it could become questionable. Although a kitchen counter would probably be the worst place to eat food from, but most people along with myself would probably more disgusted if someone ate something off of a patch of grass.

Instincts = flawed?

as long as the surface onto which the drop the food is clean, relatively to the cleanliness of the plate the person was eating from in the first place.

Incidentally, I'd guess most plates aren't a whole lot cleaner, at the bacterial level, than most floors

This is a very good question. First I have rules for home and rules for eating out. If it falls on the floor at home you have till the count of five before the dog gets it..........survival of the fittest! Eating out and something hits the floor it STAYS there.

Disgust me?

No.

Though I guess it depends on the surface they dropped it on -- at most I might say "ewwww".

It wouldn't actually disgust me, though.

After all, I'M not the one eating it.

if it is a kid or toddle no since most are curious about taste and smell but as an adult off the floor gross if it is falling of the table and catch in mid-air not really that much but falls off the plate no.

I've dropped stuff at home & eaten it but I would never do it in public.

No. Unless it drops into mud or obvious dirt.

5 second rule.
If its in their house, or just on the table, or somewhere very clean, its fine.
If its out in public, somewhere gross, or on the street, then hell no.

Nobody gets sick from it somewhere clean. I guess im just not uptight.
