If St. Cloud isn't too far for you, try the Sauk River. Just find a public acess and walk 1/2 mile or so up and down river from it. You are GUARANTEED to catch many 2-3 lb fish with the occasional 5+ biting. From Western MN it would be a drive, but go with some buddies so it won't matter.

Go to the DNR (Dept of Natural Resources) website for MN. They have an excellent "catalog" of lakes for various fish.

And, most "streams" and river systems in MN have Small-mouth living in them.

Your best bet is to find a "stream" with some depth and fish it with 1/4 OZ jigs and Crawdad imitators; small Rapala's in "gold" or "silver". Through a system of elimination you WILL find a hot Small-mouth stream, (and usually NO-ONE will have fished it for Smallies, so the fish will take artificial-bait easily!)

Good luck!
