True artist's prints are limited editions and are numbered on the front, usually in pencil, with a limit, like 150/300, this being number 150 of 300. The number on the back is the item or inventory number of Masterpiece Collection which is an unlimited run of commercially made copies. The brown paper is to hide the details that would show it was not on an artist's easel in its life.

Yankee...The fact that the painting is numbered means that it's a reprint. Artists don't number originals.

Does it say something like....171/500? That means that it is copy 171 out of a group of 500 reprints.

My advice?....I'm a big Rockwell fan too, just enjoy it for what it is...and if are really, really curious about what the painting is worth...take it to a Rockwell collector or one of those "Antique Road Show" things for an evaluation.
