Toy dogs; Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Yorkshire Terrier, and all dogs that can be trained well (read: no pitbulls).

When they are that little, no dog would probably be preferable. But if you want a dog very badly, I'd get a smaller one for the kid's sake. Big dogs can sometimes be (not on purpose) obnoxious and they tend to plop down on your feet or lap or jump up on you, which is not good for the baby or yourself. So, I'd get like a pug or a jack Russel terrier or another small and manageable dog.

Most mutts are kid-friendly, but if you want a purebred, all breeds would be suitable if trained not to attack--however, if you are not very experienced, avoid dogs such as rottweilers, pit bulls--dogs like that. Small dogs like chihuahuas and pomeranians are not suitable because they are nippy. Akitas are aloof and do not like children so do not get one.

The breeds that love children most include Labradors, golden retrievers, beagles, bichon frises, and Bologneses. Make sure your children do not harm dogs before you get one. Don't get your purebred from a breeder or pet store; get one from a breed rescue group or a shelter! Shelters don't usually have the purebred you may want, so a breed rescue group would be a better choice if you are breed-specific. This is a great source for purebreds:

The dogs are mostly purebred and well-socialized.

I raised a golden retriever and my grandson together, and they were a perfect match. She learned to leave his toys alone - can't say the same for him! They would both crawl into her kennel at naptime, and she would jump into the bathtub with him. But they were always supervised. As much as I trusted her, I would never leave them alone. My experience with smaller dogs is that SOME of them can be more high-strung and snappy. It really depends more on the dog and how much time you can devote to training BOTH the child and the dog.

A golden retriever or a lab might be a good match. They are generally very mild mannered dogs and well behaved.

I wouldn't reccommend little dogs, because they are more high-strung and as the kids get older, bigger dogs are more fun to play with. (at least I think so)

A dog of any breed can be good or bad with kids. If you are thinking about getting a dog you should definitely spend time with it beforehand. I've heard that litttle/toy dogs tend to be more agressive with kids and owners tend to have a harder time disciplining them because they are smaller and owners feel bad disciplining "cute little doggies".

Labs are great with kids. Basset hounds are good, too. Small breeds are OK for older kids, not young ones. What ever you decided on, Please be sure you understand how much work a dog will add to your daily routine. Especially a puppy.

Golden retrivers, are the best choice. The have ben shown to show apropriet affection to human, and they are much smarter than most other dogs.Try to get them when there puppies, but supprisingly the adults will actually look after and care for you children.Try to get them 5 years old in human years.Do to the "one year equalls seven in dog year" they would actually be 28.

Whatever you do... NOT a pitbull or rottweiler.

German Shepards, Labs, Retrievers, Collies, Corgis... there are many dogs that are very friendly and love children. Again, have to stress.. do not get a pit or rott, no matter what advoates of those breeds tell you, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Here is a list of dogs that are rated 1-5 .. 1: being the best with kids and 5: being the worst with kids.

All dogs can get along with children as long as they are raised with them from puppyhood.

Hope that helps!

Little dogs are not always a good choice. They often are a little snappy. I would recommend something like a Golden retriever or lab. YOu never hear about them hurting a kid. Dalmations, pitbulls, rottweilers, cocker spaniels, chow chows and bassett hounds, are often reported for biting kids or worse. Adult supervision is a must no matter what kind of dog you have.
