If what you are doing isn't working, then it may be that you are not doing it right. Sometimes it is very hard to teach from reading on how to do it.

It is best that you take an obedience class with your dog so you BOTH know what to do. Clicker training is easy but it's much easier when you know how to do it correctly.

You can read all you want but if you are not doing it correctly, it's useless.

You need to train your dog regularly before you attempt clicker training. The best thing you can do is to take your dog to a training class where a professional trainer will help you train your dog. If you can't, use treats to train your dog. Train everyday in 10-15 minute increments. If your dog gets frustrated, he will not listen to you. Work on one thing at a time and build on what he knows. Start with "sit", then move on to "down", then "stay". Use the treat to lure him into whatever position you want him to be in and then give him the treat when he obeys. Walk your dog every day on a leash, make sure he doesn't walk in front of you. Keep the leash short enough he has no choice but to walk beside you. If he pulls too much for you, you can get a gentle leader, a halter that goes around his snout and the back of his head. It stops almost any pulling.
Keep working with him, he will learn what you want from him if you keep trying.

Have you ever watched The Dog Whisperer on National Geographic? Cesar Milan is The Dog Whisperer. He has a great book "Cesar's Way" that helps you understand the whole philosophy behind his training.

Cesar thinks that exercise is the most important element to training a dog. Getting a dog to walk correctly on a leash helps in every aspect of their training.

I could go on and on. Remember that dogs are simple creatures. Positive reinforcement gets you everywhere. They are happiest when you are in control and they can just be a dog. Treat and praise will get you very far with your dog.

Start with the basics with your dog, sit, stay, come, down. Even if he already know those commands work with him because he will love the attention, and his focus on you will help your bonding and inspire and encourage him to obey you. Good luck!

You need to be taught how to train your dog and the best way to acquire this education is through obedience classes. They will teach you about dog behavior and how to train your dog. Very difficult to do it from books or tapes if you do not understand dog behavior.

Hi Nikki,

your best bet would be to check out:

http://usefulresources.info/dogtrainingsecrets.html

I have 3 dogs and it's the best dog training resource I've come across so far, suitable for all dogs. I'm very satisfied with the positive results brought by their step by step program.

Hope that helps! :-)

Best wishes,
Kimberly

Obedience school. Some schools teach the owner as well as the dog. A school like that will help you both.

Use a gentle leader or no pull harness. I don't like the ones that fit around the nose, I prefer the harness. I don't know how old your dog is, but mature ones are usually very docile and will walk right at your heel even without a leash. You might consider altering yours to calm it unless you plan on breeding.

get a treat and let the dog smell it and then say the word at least 5 times and then figure out a way to make them do it without you forcing them doing it and just repeat that for about 10 minutes, and then stop for the day. then keep doing that every day until they learn it. they might even learn it the first day, but be patient

Your local library is a wonderful resource, why not use it??

There are several dozen training programs out there, and they all work. All you need to do is decide which suits your needs the best. Can't do that without doing a little reading.
