I am trying to set up a study on the fear of the Lord, I need to ask how does someone teach on the fear of God the right way. I know that if your were taught to fear God the wrong way when your young it can hurt a child in a long run..we teach them God is Love and then you tell them you have to fear God. I have found a couple scriptures on fear that if you would like share your thought on them and if you have any that would be better to explain please let me know..All are welcome to answer but it is mostly for believers to answer. Thanks
Isaiah 8:13 (King James Version)

Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

1 Peter 2:17 (King James Version)
Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

Fear is not what most ppl get right when they think of God. Fearing God means to love Him fully, respect Him, honor Him in obedience and love, knowing He knows best and only He knows how to keep you safe and HIS. Its like a chld at age 12 that is rebellious. HE msut have a certain fear and respect of his dad for his dad to be able to teach him correctly. He knows if he doesnt do right, dad will have to deal with him. Now thats not fearing beatings and such, but fearing the loss of relationship. Same with God. and yet with God we do know we could lose not only our relationship, but our life. BUt God gives us a set of instruction on what to do to keep salvation and how to lose it. It is not His fault, if ppl only rebel and do as they please, which is from listening the voice of the devil. Jesus saves, heals and delivers. LEts get on track with Him and stay there. HE says we must abide in Him. Abiding...... lovine, fearing, obeying. all of it just like Jesus had for Father God. We must teach this, as so many teach fearing God and preaching them out of hell. No, we dont want them in hell and hell is surely a choice, But so is HEaven. WE must love them into Heaven, not try to get them there by scaring them from hell. Doesnt work and it confuses ppl. Jesus does talk about hell and its ok if we do too. BUt, the main message is God < jesus Hmself and the Holy Spirit, and if we are in obedience, we have no reason to fear HELL. NOw thats preaching truth. Keep doing what you are doing, you are on track with God.

Dear t k,

i would also read through the book of Proverbs-- it talks about the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. There is a very wonderful book by Jerry Bridges (he's the Vice President of Navigators- a very famous campus ministry) called the Joy of Fearing God. And it presents a nice Scriptural balance as to how fear (a respect and awe) for God is wise and healthy.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

Why does a small child stay out of the street or keep their hands away from the stove? Do they understand what would happen if they got hit by a car or if they got burned? No they don't. They fear the spanking - THAT, they understand.

In this same sense, The fear of the Lord is the begining of wisdom". Do what He says - NOT because you've gotten to the point to understand all that God understands (can you hear all the two year olds "But WHY?") - but because He says so.

Following all the "silly little rules" that He gives us really does protect us - and He doesn't need to explain all the "whys" behind them, and we couldn't understand all of it anyhow.

How about "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."
(Proverbs 1:7)

I understand that the fear of the Lord is for us to be in respect and awe of Him. When you were a little kid were you in fear and awe of your father? You weren't probably really afraid of him...unless of course you did something that got you in trouble. But, I bet you were in awe of him when he could do neat things that you couldn't do. If he said you could NOT DO something I bet you had a respect (a fear) that you should not do that...right? But you knew he loved you and you wanted his attention even if it meant that sometimes you got in trouble. It is the same way with God.

The fear of the Lord is the acute awareness of the presence of God's power that produces a sense of awe and calls forth from honor, respect and reverence.

Fear of god the right way? Just tell them about hell. Most people seem to think that works.

If you want to not disturb the children liken it to being fearful of angering their parents. It's not true fear in the way it's understood today. This type of fear is not wanting to displease God. I hope you get what I'm talking about.

Fear of God means to be in awe of God...not afraid.

What is it about the word fear do you not understand? I don't care what any of you think fear means because fear means fear and there should be no confusion about it. Fear the Lords judgment for you life of sin, rebuke sin or suffer the consequences.

I think people need to stop concentrating on filling there kids heads up with religion and the bible and they need to teach them real world skills so they can make a living on there own and be self sufficient.

I know I dont want my kids thinking they need to spend all of there time in a church preaching to others. I would rather them have open minds and be self sufficient.
