I scored 77 on my ASVAB. My reason for joining the millitary was for 75% public service 25% signing bonus. My bonus is $20,000. I agreed to be a UT Utilitiesman. I'm nervous because I'm not interested in UT. It's blue collar work, and I'm not that kind of guy. However, I feel I could adapt as it's reserves, and I don't see them calling Navy reserves unless WW III broke out. That doesn't mean I wouldn't serve and fight for this great nation. I'm just not the real tough kind of guy. I'm very laid back. Please advise me what you all think of my situation?

Ask your recruiter to fill out a DAR for rate change to whatever else you qualify for that you would like to do. Your bonus will go away, but there is always the public service 75% to make up for it. Im suprised the classifier didnt mention this. And if this isnt a viable option for you, send a letter to meps informing them that you want to attrite and why.

First of all you are DREAMING about the not being called up!! You WILL BE actived from moment one after "A" school. Why do you think you are getting a $20k enlistment bonus. They don't even pay nuclear engineers with a 99 ASVAB that much for an enlistment bonus. Do you want to know why you are getting paid that much??? Because ALL of the SEABEE jobs are critical right now. It won't last forever, but for right now they need as many people as they can get to be forward deployed to Iraq. Who do you think is rebuilding and building everything there?? SEABEES just like you are going to be. You are building everything needed for the physical secuirty of all the forces there. You won't have time to be laid back and white collar. You are going to be moving and working full time as an activated Navt UT. You will be earning your $20K absolutely. I am a Navy MEPS Classifer and am amazed that somebody signed you up for this and you didn't ask some critical questions like why is the bonus so large? The average enlistment bonus is $3K to $12K and the nukes are the ones getting the $12k. Congratulations on personally helping the war effort Mr. UT Reservist. See you activated in the fleet!!! Also, don't slam the UT rating as being blue collar it is one of the few Navy jobs that you can do in the civilian world the day you get out for over $100K a year. Are you making that much in the civilian world right now???

as a Seabee you WILL be called up to deploy to Afghanistan or Iraq. Period. In fact you stand a higher chance as a Reservist to get called up than you would if you were AD and a SeaBee.

NEVER pick a rating based on the bonus. all the money in the world won't matter if you are spending the next 4-6 years stuck in a rating you hate.

You are going to be activated the same day you graduate from "A" School. You're going to be forward deployed to Iraq. If you think the navy gives out $20,000 enlistment bonuses for no good reason, well, you're about to find out different.

What do I think? Well, if you want to be a UT that's great. If you picked it for the money you made a huge mistake.

Don't know why you would sign up for something your not interested in,(well yes the money) Sounds like you might be in over your head, I'd feel better if your percentages were say at least 90% service and 10% money, but you did join and thats a pluss, grin and bear it , good luck.
