Here is how to preform a canine Heimlich:

I figured it was easier to actually see an illustration along with a description... and since I can't draw diagrams on here I thought the website would be best! Hope this helps!

First make sure he is actually choking, you can stick your finger in his throat and swipe for foreign objects. If he stops breathing have someone drive you to the vet while giving him CPR.
For a large dog you hold his mouth shut and breath into his nose twice (not to hard) then press on his heart twice(hard to describe how to hold your hands, but like how you would for a human). Repeat until you get him to the vet- be sure to call ahead to let them know you are coming.
For a small dog do the same-just not as hard and use two fingers to press on the heart.
Make sure the dogs airway is actually obstructed before starting this-check for breathing by watching to see if the chest is rising and try to feel for breath.
You can look on line for illustrated instructions, and you can get pet CPR certified.
Keep small things away from the dog to prevent any accidental choking.

USE CAUTION TRYING to DIGanything out of the dog or anyones Trachea The gag reflex natural defense Cna cause a nasty BITE, or you can a) lodge the Item further Blocking off ANY air exchage at all or Causing DAmage to the throat and trachia.... TO do a Hyemlic on human or animal YOU need AIr IN the lungs to do the removal , your pressing on the abdomin below the rib cage to force the diaphram up to force the air out with no air there is nothing to "force the cork" out ....if this is the case, I would try with the head chest tilted downward to sharply deliverfour or fiveback blows between the shoulder blades to hopefully dislodge the item and out .. when you enter a finger pushing the item in can force the trachea to close further on it andit will never come out.. worst possible outcome.....

First, determine if he's really choking. Can you hear him breathe? If so, leave him alone.
If he's really choking, and cannot breathe:
Pull whatever he's choking on out of his throat.
Heimlich maneuver is next.
Tracheotomy is last resort.

most dogs can get whatever they are choking on out by themselves, but if they cant and they are turning blue, then you can put your finger in their throat and try to remove whatever it is or you can do a minni heimlich on your dog by pushing gently in and up right below their ribs.

Wait a few seconds to see if he brings it up. Check to see if it's caught in his teeth and against the throat. Then turn him over (head down) and squeeze the stomach to help bring it up. Call a vet.

you have to go in with your fingers and feel around for what's choking him and call the animal shelter! they will tell you., your vet too but usually that's it. be prepared for them to bite you it won't be their fault. dog's are very protective of what they put in their mouths and will think your trying to take it from them. peace!

If the are coughing/hacking, let them cough it up. Don't pound on their back. Just rub their back and let them know that you're there if its seriously stuck.
If it's seriously stuck, try giving him liquids. If that fails, try getting it out with your bare hands. And if push comes to shove, contact a vet.

If the dog can breathe, nothing. If the dog cannot breathe then do the heimlich manuver on the dog.
