Being a sniper in the military is a little more complicated than you think. It has very strict pscological profile screening process. More often then not they some with judgment skills then a killer. A friend a mine went through it he had to hide a port potty and get pissed on for 2 days. Their main job is recon dude not killing. Finding the enemy. What good is a man that does one shot one kill. anyone can pickup a gun and learn how to shoot. Hell they made a Army commercial about it 2 days of rations a week in the field just watching.

The standard rifle for the Army is the M-24 and for the Marines its the M-42. Both are versions of a Remmington 700. So, that is your answer, practice with a remmington 700 and a decent Leupold scope and that would be a good start. Also, get some literature on ballistics, wind deflection, etc... Being a sniper is more about understanding how a bullet travels than pointing it in the right direction.

first of all its almost impossible to become a sniper. a lot of people try out and dont make it. one of my friends told me the final test for becoming a sniper. you are in the woods and their is a siloutte of a person holding a hostage, you have to wait 48 hours and during those 48 hours the hostage will go down for a few seconds and you must shoot the enemy. sounds pretty hard to me.
you have to be natrually good with guns i guess, and very very very patient.

Go talk to a shrink. Normal people don't like the idea of having to kill someone.
You will find that in the military those that would least want to be a sniper are the ones that are chosen. Those that would want the job are simply not mentally stable enough to do it.

Join the Army. Civilian shooting courses will not prepare you for being a sniper.

Complete your high school education if not already completed. Study hard and make the best grades you can. Begin a program of physical exercise. Join the service and with the amount of work and natural talent you may be selected for the program.

You need to join the Army, there is no civilian training that can really prepare you. You should enlist as Infantry.
