The pet store says, take him out every day until he gets used to you, and other people on here say, if it runs away from you, let it be. When I pick him up i can not, and when I say I cant, I REALLY CANT get him to stop moving. People also say pet it and stuff, well I cant because he is running like crazy. How do i make him so he feels safe (I already tried treats). Its been a week, and it has been the same since day one, and I gave him plenty of time to get settled in his new cage, about a week until I tried picking him up. Will this ever change, or should I get one like my old one ( It would lay in your hand even on the first day) to replace this thing. I know i sound a bit mean, but this thing is a pest.

Remember that to your dwarf hamster you are ENORMOUS! Here are some things to help you to make him feel more secure:
1. Talk to him when you want to take him out. It sounds silly but it really does help because it lets him know you are there. Wouldn't you be scared if a giant, silent hand reached down out of the sky to grab you?
2. Use an empty toilet paper tube to get him out. Let him climb into it and then climb out into your hand. Hamsters get really stressed and upset when you just reach in and grab them (your hand reminds them of the talons on a bird of prey).
3. Only take him out when he is already fully awake and moving around. Just about anything is cranky when you wake it up and then expect it to play.

Try these things before you give up hope. Handle him often and carefully. I hope this helps!

Yeah, it does sound mean. All animals are different, including hamsters, you can't just 'get one like your old one'. It's not a little robot toy or something, it's a living creature!!

You do need to handle the animal every day to get it used to you. You can't expect it to be still, hamsters are very active animals. It's weird that your previous one was just still. Don't try to hold the hamster still, just let it run over your hands, it will get used to you in time. Young rodents all need to be handled regularly before they become properly tame.

It's not a pest, it's a hamster, and it's doing what hamsters do.

Well, what I have learned is that with dwarfs every one is different. In this situation you just need to be patient. To help your dwarf hamster get used to your hand stick it inthe cage but dont scoop your hamster up let it come into your hand it will settle down and then pick it up. Hope this helps!!!

dwarf hamsters are tough. They are quite aggressive at times. I would use two hands and let him run over one to the other, over and over again, that's what I did with my rats...it's tiring, but they get used to being handled, just do it til you get tired, put him back and come back later, the approach and retreat tactic works best.

do you noe tat animals can sense animosity and fear from human and run away from you when you try to pick it up??the scoop method is good, corner the hamster with one hand and scoop it up wif ur other, then cup ur hand together to prevent it from running off...n,like humans, hamsters are different, some are just more friendly while some are not...please be more patient and give it more time....good luck...
