What is better to buy a car or a motorcycle to do this? Would it be better to sleep in the car on your journey or go into the woods with your motorcycle and put up a tent? Also is it advisable to bring with you weapons such as a BB gun (that looks like a real gun), pepper spray and a knight stick?

Ok, why would I be kidding? And why would I be looking for trouble? I'm looking to enjoy myself. The tame weapons are to protect myself. You know what, don't even answer if you can't answer.

And again the dream is still alive. We've been there 20 years
ago figured all out,car ( Unimog 4 wheel drive ),distance and the time we would need (for us it would have taken a year,at
least ).---- and never did it !
Panamericana is a long and winding highway 30000 km long.
From Canada to Panama it is not so far,may be 8000 Km.(driven down on the west coasts ) If i had the choice today and alone,i would take a motorcycle.Even Guatemala,El Salvador,Costa Rica and Columbia are not to dangerous to travel through. That's my opinion on that.
Guns ? Donno about that.I'd rather would say no.
Well Lad,don't hesitate,like we did.It'll be a lifetime experience.
Don't forget, good planing is half the battle, but you know that already ,don't you ? Go for it and have fun.

GOOD LUCK and i mean it !!

Keep in mind, some roads south of the US border are in rough shape. Mexico's toll roads are worth the price; beyond that, expect mucho potholes.

In general, do NOT drive at night in Latin America. Even if relatively crime-free areas like Costa Rica, sudden curves are not well-marked as they are up north, and there can be a steep drop-off. Even natives generally don't drive at night.

If you plan to camp, do not do so in remote areas - choose established sites that can provide clean water and a measure of safety. Although rare, things do happen where no one is looking (not to mention poisonous insects/snakes).

Crossing borders with weapons (especially firearms) can be problematic - Mexico in particular frowns on it. Mexico may also require guarantees that you do not plan on selling your car within its borders. But I'd find a way to bring/buy something along - just in case.

You will also need special insurance for Mexico and presumably below.

Do not travel alone.

I'm not an SUV fan, but that would probably be your best bet for a vehicle.

I would drive a station wagon or a small SUV. Not a small car. At least if you sleep inside you can lock the doors and feel somewhat safe. I would want a real gun, but would not take one. With pepper spray you can be at a distance and not have to be real close to someone. to use it. But do take something for protection.
