its fine. I've done it many many time (not a hair iron, but other electronics)

some hotels even have converters built into the bathroom wall electrical plug

I'd wait to get to Europe to buy a converter though. you might not need one because of the built in ones. just see whats going on in the hotel first.

Airports are a guaranteed place to find a converter.

I'm not sure I understand exactly the question you're asking but here goes anyway.

I assume you want to know if it will run?

The answer is to check the little plate on it and see what voltages and frequencies it runs at.

They vary from the US to Europe and even vary slightly within Europe itself.
If your appliance has a fixed US voltage and frequency..say 120v...60Hz then you won't be able to use it in Europe.
If it has variable voltage and frequency....say 100-220v...50/60Hz then you will be able to use it.

This is because your appliance runs on various voltages and will work on the voltage and frequency in Europe.
You WILL still need a socket adapter though to change the pin configuration at the plug...you can't just plug it straight into a socket as it stands.

But, a plug adapter DOES NOT alter the voltage or frequency in any way, it simply changes the pin configuration....if your appliance isn't multi-voltage then it won't work whatever you do.
In fact. since European voltages are generally higher then in the US you will probably find that it will burn out if you try.

Get a transformer that has mutiple voltage settings on it. If you have a 1200 watt HD, it draws 10 Amps at 110V, but less than 5 at 220.
Get one with enough amperage. In Britain they have 240 volts.
Watts/volts=amps.

Buy one when you get there. I bought one at Radio Shack and brought it here, and it burned out my clock radio, so I didn't use it anymore. The one I bought here works fine with all of my electronics. I think Travel PAC is the brand.
