I will be going to Dalian, China to study abroad for a semester this fall. Anything I need to know before I go

da lian is amazing. i saw the pacific ocean for the first time from there. i'm from north carolina--so i thought that was funny to say the least. da lian is strange because it's so european in terms of architecture but then so chinese. it's one of the few places that the communists didn't destroy in the cultural revolution. all of the beer is very german. the germans colonized the area and built lots of breweries there--so tsing dao is made there as are a few others. i was only there for spring break--so i'm sure you'll learn a lot more about the area. be sure to visit beijing while you're living in china as well as lots of other places. however, you want to make sure you "live" in da lian. otherwise, you'll constantly feel like a stranger in your "hometown".

I don't think Dalian will be very expensive if you're American or British, our exchange rates are very favourable and you will find living there quite easy. It will be very cold in the winter but you'll be able to buy coats etc there. I assume you're going to study Chinese so be prepared to do lots of work, especially learning characters. Being in Dalian it makes it much easier to travel to Japan if you fancy it because of the ferry and plane services. You'll have a few beaches but they won't be much use to you in the Autumn. If you're there for next year's new year (feb/march time) then enjoy yourself. Good luck and have a great time!

your school should have all that information for you. there are also government wesites you could go to and see what you NEED to know about the country.
have fun. I'll be going to study abroad next spring semester in China too (Beijing) and i already begun this whole process. too much i have to keep in mind.
