yes it is true. it is the lather that suffocates the fleas & dawn is safe to use. you can also comb them out of the lather.
it is used frequently on wildlife that have gotten into trouble such as all the birds from the Valdeze incident some years ago

Dawn dishwash liquid does just as good at getting rid of the fleas (it washes them off in the rinse ) and it is safer for your dog. The other stuff is actually poison. Poison isn't healthy for Fleas or your dog.You wash the fleas down the drain and your dog doesn't go down.Make sure you rinse him good. You can put "Unicure" on them when you rinse them and this is good for their skin and makes them smell real good.It is hard to find though.

It does kill some and weaken the others making it easy to "flea comb" the dead and weakened ones out but it is not as effective as flea prevention products like Advantix, Frontline or BioSpot when it comes to getting rid of fleas and keeping them off.

I have used it and it does kill them although the dog shampoo had pyrethrens in there which is a poison type stuff to kill them and linger on afterwards. I would wonder if Dawn would strip their coat if used too often.

I have wiped my dog down with dawn after our walks especially when he goes in the bushes. It has worked and I have no fleas in the house either.

Any soap or shampoo will kill a fleas on the animal. It will not keep them off though, so you will have to deal with the fleas in the house and yard.

if you soap him down without water first...fleas breath thru their skins..like ticks.so if you coat them they will die...if you add pennyroyal oil and peppermint oil (which also is great to keep flys away you will kill them for sure, and the puppy smells great and the ones outside wont jump on him...but make sure when you do this to spray the areas that your pet sleeps in with pennyroyal and water and put pine needles under his bedding which defers fleas also..and vacumme the same day (vaccumme up some pennyroyal leaves to) which will kill the carpet dwellers and the ones in the vacumme......worked for me

Yes It does work, I have tried it.
Do not use it on a regular basis, as it can really dry out you dogs skin and hair.
If you use it, be sure to rinse really, really good. Then condition the coat.
