meaning will the picture come in in non HD on a HD tv until i can get HD setup

Yes it will work, but you will not get a hd picture without an hd box.
Also i heard somewhere that if you use cable on hdtv's it can be x-tra wear on the set?
If that is true, i am not sure.

yes it will show as a regular picture. the picture quality may still be noticeably improved but just not in hd format.

yes and if you have a built in hd tuner you can get hd with an antenna
