I once answered a translation question in the Languages category. I teach English to Spanish speakers for a living and I still got a thumbs down even though the translation was accurate. Does this make sense? No, not at all. People like giving out thumbs down and it happens in all the sections. Sometimes it's spiteful, sometimes people do it to make their answer look better. In the end it doesn't really matter.

Thumbs up and thumbs down are just another way of expressing your own opinion. An atheist might give a thumbs down to a really poor Christian answer. A Christian might give a thumbs down to an atheist he seriously disagrees with.

It's very important not to worry about it too much when you're on the receiving end. The number of people from any group varies wildly during the day and the responses you get often reflects that fact more than the merit of your answers. My advice is write the best answers you can and don't pay any attention to how others respond. If you read something you like, give it a thumbs up. If you read something you hate, nail 'em with a big thumbs down. This is a totally anonymous public forum and nothing that happens here ever really means anything, either way.

If I give a thumbs down to an answer it's because I don't agree with them. The answer usually has given me a negative guttural reaction. I give a lot more thumbs up than down.
I love checking to see how many up or downs I've gotten. It lets me know people are reading and reacting to my answers.

it doesn't hurt there is no pain involved don't let it get to you
when I look at a answer that has a lot of thumbs down I only think that there are a lot of people that disagree with that answer and when I see a lot of thumbs up I think that there are a lot of people that do agree with the answer, no big deal if you see a answer that has thumbs down and you don't agree with the thumbs down give it a thumbs up

I give thumbs down to answers that I either strongly disagree with or when I don't believe the answerer is actually answering the question at hand. I also give them to people that are unnecessarily rude.

Thumbs down should only be given when the answer is threatening or offensive. I know that the word "offensive" is open to debate, so I guess only if the answer is threatening or harassing towards atheists or Christians or anybody.

I don't give out thumbs down. If I don't agree with an answer I just let it blank. I think people do this sometimes to be rude, or because they don't like a particular person or their beliefs.

The thumbs run rampant here in r+s. This has mainly become a chat forum and a popularity contest. Thumbs mean nothing here.

I am a Christian and have given thumbs down to several non- Christ-like Christians. My thumb downs are all given for attitude!

I give thumbs up and down to individuals who "claim" to share my belief. As far as individuals with different beliefs than mine, I only give a down if it is a racist remark or they are attacking someone. I have answered many questions and provided sources and proof for my answer, yet get thumbs down. It doesn't bother me in the least. Even if you disagree with someone, it doesn't necessarily constitute a thumbs down.

I like the thumbs. It says rate it. I use both the up and down thumbs. Just don't take it personal. Seems to fall along party lines.
