His kids shouldn't have to serve. But he shouldn't be allowed to be president if he didn't serve in the military himself when he was younger. Although I'd still rather have Bush than John Kerry.

But there are some politicians with family in the service, John McCain's son is in the Navy and so are others. The other thing they forget is that it might not be you own son or daughter but what if it was your brother's son or sister's daughter do you not think they would mean a lot to you when you make decisions. Even your best friend's child could be in service. It is such a stupid come back. I guess George Washington would be out of luck if he started a war since he and Martha did not produce an heir. Plus as the Brits found out sending Harry probably would of increased the danger for the troops around him as the terrorists would have loved to have his scalp on their swords. Any president that has sent troops to war know what he is doing in terms of lives that could be lost so if they are his children or someone else you know they have feelings about this. I did not like Bill Clinton or his move to push us into Bosnia but I trusted he knew the dangers he put our troops in even though his daughter was not one of them.

1 problem Bush is a politician not a fighter he would be forcing his kids to become a politician which in way worse than sending them to Iraq. He is sending soldiers to Iraq to fight a very unpopular war and these soldiers are peoples sons and daughters so they are very mad and rightly so. I don't even think Bush can explain why we are still in Iraq in such a force years after Mission accomplished we should be pulling out of there now and letting UN sort out this civil war between them we are wasting our money and resources that we could be spending on homeland defense and health care issues. and there is no end in site. This has been blatantly obvious for a while now and and if the war goes on to much longer congress will stop it we just need get out of there before we spend to much more of my tax dollars to do something that the global community as a whole should be concentrating on Isn't that that the part of the purpouse of the U.N. to begin with ?

He choose to send thousands of other people's children into harm, yes they chose that by enlisting in the military, but why is that most enlisted people don't have a college education? They choose to go into the military because they can't afford to go to a 4 year school, so why is it fair that Bush's children get to school, live in the lap of dad's and grand father's funds while the poor are being shuffled into the military as a way to get awy from the poverty they grew up in.

I can tell you one thing, after having an underage drinking conviction, this one won't be heading into the teacher ranks:

It is entirely obvious that his kids are taking right after their daddy. Certainly not VOLUNTEERING to fight in daddy's military campaigns, just like daddy AVOIDED serving mandatory military time. Being AWOL doesn't count.
I do agree with the premise of your argument. The kids should be free to follow whatever path their hearts desire. I totally agree with that. Much of what I wrote above was written in a sarcastic manner...except it is true that with a conviction, you can't teach. The background checks flag that stuff.
I think what we would like to see is either a huge pay increase for the military that has to go back to Iraq again and again and again...while so many of us sit at home on Yahoo Answers debating this thing, OR institute the draft, so then service become compulsory, instead of voluntary.
Then, I don't think any of us would have any arguments.

Whoa, I'm so sure that Matt is eagerly awaiting your question and is typing out his reply as I do mine. Where are you coming from? Bush's kids aren't a problem, and if someone says that they are, I'm sure they have tough enough skin to take a rebuke from Matt Damon! Why are you so invested in these kids? Are you a relative? Either way, I hope you can feel better now that you have put Matt in his proper place!

You are right. Nobody is SENT to the military. They are all their of their own choice.
I also hear the argument that these kids did not think that they would go to war, and signed up for the college tuition. My answer to that is that if they made such an assumption, they are too stupid for college. Reality is that they knew EXACTLY what they were signing up for, and are brave enough to sign up (save a few who run off AWOL to Canada)

Actually, the law says they can't serve. Look it up. It is felt their presence in the troops would endanger the rest of the soldiers; and I agree.
Still the question remains: how come Bush can't instill a sense of civic duty in his daughters, who keep coming on like Paris Hilton wannabees. What does that say about the values in the Bush family.
And why is it that no-one in the Administration or Congress has kids in the war? Explain that carefully to me...

I agree. I mean most of these men and women who are in the armed forces weren't forced to join, they did so voluntary. So let anyone else make that same choice. I mean isn't that one of our freedoms.
Smart comeback about would you force your children to be actors. That is so true. Let people choice thier future career choice for themselves.

It's a stupid argument by disingenuous people. Following their goofy logic, we could never defend ourselves if the president (any president) didn't have children in the military.
And, face it, since all politicians now are very wealthy, it has become rare for any politician to have children in the military. They all become lobbyists or lawyers, or go to Wall Street and make more millions.
