I always thought it was like up to the back of the head (called the crown) or something. Is this true?

straightforward - to an imaginary line that would "line up" with the top of the head. If you stood with your back to the wall - and something like a book or ruler was rested on the top of your head - and held perpendicular to the wall - the measurement would be from the floor up to the bottom of the ruler or book.
