I have lived in the south for 39yrs. boy howdy is only used in the movies by people who are actors and not from the south and have probably never been to the south and it has absolutely no religious overtones whatsoever.

"Boy howdy" is actually more Western than Southern, and was a popular phrase back around World War I. Beyond that, I have no idea, and certainly no clue whether it was religiously connected (although probably not).
I guess I'm living proof that the older you get, the more useless bits of information you have stored away.

"Boy Howdy" is a country group founded in Los Angeles, there are no religious overtones that I am aware of.

It comes from the Howdy Doody show, a famous religious puppet celebration of the 1950s.

LOL I agree with Mario, I have lived in the South for 37 years and have never heard Boy Howdy. I have heard people say "Boy oh Boy" or "Howdy", but never the two together. Sorry. Thanks and have a great day!

No, it doesn't and most folks nowadays don't use that expression much anymore. It's just an exclamation of enthusiastic agreement which can be used in both a genuine or sarcastic tone.

No religious connection that I am aware of...but yes ,I have heard that term quite often...I live in the south....with more of a northern mentality.....these phrases are kind of embarrasing as representative of our unique tongue here in the deep south...."I meant ta told ya".(that's another one) with the same meaning...........man is my face red LOL

I was raised in the Deep South and I never heard anyone say that or "Ya'll come back now, ya hear?" Unless they were acting goofy. Maybe its just the younger generation who thinks its stupid. LOL
