This is for a short story I'm revising, when my female character gets attacked by a tiger, and loses blood. How much can you lose to need a blood transfusion, or go into shock and have death? I realize this has been asked before, so that's why I added the second part to this question.

4 - 5 L = Female
5 - 6 L = Male

If your hemoglobin level decreases about 0.2-0.3 then you will need to have a blood transfusion but sometimes blood tansfusion is done even the decrease of hemoglobin doesn't reach 0.3 level. This is done in order not to aggravate/wait for the hemoglobin level to reach very low.

You need to lose at most 50% of your blood in order to go into shock.

Some sources say the body contains 8-10 pints of blood. Other sources say 10-12.

You need an emergency transfusion if you lose a couple of pints. Death is likely if you lose more than about 40% of blood volume.

The amount varies by sex and size, but the average for males is 12 pints, females 9 pints. The given "average" for humans is usually stated at 10 pints due to the height, weight and sex differences.

Loss of about one third of this volume, between 3 and 4 pints, causes profound hypotension, leading to shock and shutdown of organs, first being the kidneys and then other organs.

The average adult has a blood volume of roughly 5 litres (about 10 pints). Losing more than 40% of circulating blood volume will lead to shock and death if untreated..
