of course, Tesla had it right, AC is a much better form of electrical distribution, specifically because you can so easily step it up and down via transformers. Doing so with DC is far more difficult and expensive.
Also, line losses are lower for AC than DC for a give wattage delivery and wire diameter.

Alternating current can be converted into direct current using a transformer and it experiences minimum loss due to transmission. A/C changes it polarity many times in a second. This is called frequency of the alternating current.

True, the AC/DC debate goes all the way back to Edison and Tesla. Basically, AC allows the use of cheap transformers to raise voltage and reduce current levels. Since most of the losses are related to current levels, this allows utilities to transmit power over longer distances because current levels are so much lower.
In recent years, it has become possible to convert high voltage AC to high voltage DC. High voltage DC is actually lower loss to transmit than High voltage AC because AC has frequency dependent loss.
So the answer is that that low-voltage DC has higher loss than high voltage AC, so utilities use high voltage AC for relatively short lines (few hundred miles). The use of inexpensive transformers is what makes this option a good one. For really long distance transmission, high voltage DC becomes cost effective because it has lower loss than high voltage AC. The additional rectification cost of this option is offset by the lower losses of high voltage DC.

1. Easy to step up/down using transformer
2. Not bother with plug polarity ( you can plug the wall outlet in either way)
3. Produced directly from rotating machines / power generator
4. Advantages to electric motors. DC motors use slip rings ( difficult construction & operation, slip rings are burn and the carbon brush subjected to maintenance ) than AC motors ( simple, less friction element, zero maintenance )

you can transmit alternating current over miles of cable where direct current you would need a power plant every 2 or 3 blocks as you cant send it very far over wires.

DC only gives + energy. Now, too much of either type of energy will overload the circuits. AC power, however, gives + and - energy. So, it can provide much greater energy without overloading.
