It's not good because they use piercing guns.
See:

piercing guns crush the skin and cause unnecessary trauma. The pierce the ear with the actual back of the earring, which can never be as sharp as an actual needle. Going to a piercer is much safer and comparable in price. A bad cartilage piercing is especially dangerous because I've seen some pretty bad deformities from infections that wouldn't happen on other places.

I didn't have any problems but I know some other people who did. They had to teach an employee on how to pierce ears and they thought the person was ready. The employee was being supervised by someone else and when the employee started to pierce the ear, the needle from the gun went halfway into someone's ear and the employee didn't know it. The employee asked the person supervising if they should start piercing yet! The person getting their ear pierced was screaming! But I wouldn't worry too much about getting it done at Claires, I think they learned from their mistakes now! If you really seem worried, then get it done at Icings which was made by Claires but it seems more professional. Good Luck!

Most tattoo parlors also have people who do piercings with needles instead of guns.

The same guy who did my ear cartilage piercing did my tattoo, and I've had no problems with either of them. He gave me all kinds of written information about the care of my piercing, some disinfectant in a huge bottle, and helped me change the ring for free when I got tired of the original.

Gotta say - cartilage piercing hurts worse than anything I've ever experienced, except for a mammogram. But I'm thinking of getting another, in the same ear.

I would go to a better jeweler than some kid in the mall.

BUT - know this - I work for doctors and cartilage piercings are THE single most infected piercing place EVER. I know people who've had such bad infections, after they do IV antibiotics in the hospital, they actually have to have that section of their ear surigcally removed (read: CUT OFF) to keep the infection from spreading into the rest of their body.

So, if you decide to do it, you want someone REALLY good at it and you HAVE to be really careful about taking care of it. It looks really weird to have a part of the top of your ear cut off.

Good luck!

Cartilage piercings should never be done with the punch piercer because, it can crack the cartilage and you'll end up with removing it because it is more painful, especially while trying to sleep at night. You should go to a Tattoo place where they pierce the cartilage rather than cracking it.
