My own experience was really awful. It hurts like hell every time an adjustment is done. All I can eat are soft sandwiches and sometimes I can't even especially after an adjustment. Most of the time I had them I only drank cereal drink and ate sandwiches. I lost a lot of weight then and I had them on for 3 years! However there is also a bright side. Once you get used to the adjustment you can eat some of the usual foods you were used to eating until the next adjustment. But the end result is great.

When putting braces, it doesn't hurt when placed and you will feel only a little pressure but that pressure is not painfull!
Now with the eating issue, you can eat everything but in small pieces, you cannot eat a whole apple using your teeth or just big things you have to cut them to small pieces because if you eat an entire apple or another big thing you will break your braces and try to not chew chewing gum because it gets stuck inside your braces and it's a headache to get rid of the chewing gum inside them and also avoid eating things that are very hard to chew because it will break your braces and a broken brace is a complete mess and a total trouble inside your mouth!
By the way I had braces for 5 year and a half because, I disregard my dentist orders about what not to eat, but the wait worth the time, now I have a good smile and good teeth!
Good Luck and hope this answer solves your doubts in the best way possible!
See ya and have a happy smile!

it hurts after they're first put on...most people take painkillers for the first day or two until your teeth adjust a bit and it's not so sore.in the beginning (ie the first few days) you'll only want to eat soft foods because anything else will hurt but after the first week or so you can pretty much eat anything you want...
your orthodontist will give you a list of foods you can't eat but really you can eat most of them if your careful (ie. cutting up apples etc...)
i got around the sweets thing by just sucking them because that wont break your braces!!chewing gum is the only thing that you should probably avoid cos its a ***** if it gets stuck.
also after eating sugary foods/drinks be extra extra careful brushing your teeth..your orthodontist will show you the right way to brush with the new toothbrush you'll get (like a regular toothbrush but with a dent in the middle kinda)
oh and also when you get them adjusted they might be a little bit sore for a couple of hours but if you take a painkiller you'll be grand and by the time it wears off the pain will more than likely be gone.
hope that was some help:)

I also have braces but anyways:
Hurting? Yes it does hurt for the first couple of days, maybe for about a week or so which sometimes make it seem impossible to eat. Also you have to develope callusses too but dont worry you get used to them that you don't even notice them at all what-so-ever. They give some supplies to help cope with the pain like wax and suggests to take medication.
Eating? You can eat anything as long as the food is not hard or sticky like hard candys or gum. If you eat apples, make sure your mom or dad cuts them into smaller peices. Also make sure you clean your teeth morning and night. Because if you drink a of pop or something, you have to clean your teeth/braces good. Because it will stain your teeth and make a somewhat circle on your teeth that you can never get out.
If you have anymore questions you should ask your othodontist. They can tell you everything that you want to know!

it doesn't hurt that terrible, and you can eat fine - but it's easier to eat soft foods than hard foods.
don't worry about them. You don't have to go around thinking about it all the time. Most of the time people really don't notice. They usually look at your eyes, your face, etc. They look at you. You'll look better if you smile - braces or not. There's people who worry about their braces,a nd they don't wash their face or hair or anything. That's insane.

It doesn't hurt when they put them on. But a little while after getting them on your teeth might start to feel sore, but it will go away once your teeth adjust to the braces!
